Occasionally I'll get sick before mine but I don't think it's "normal".
You probably have the flu or something. You could still keep yourself prepared just in case you do start. Wear panty liners and keep a spare undie & pad/ tampon with you. Women frequently start over night and first notice it in the morning when they get up, so you probably won't have and accident but if you are worried about it stay

I've been getting periods for a long time and my immunity has always been lowest right before it starts. Sometimes I'll get a headache the first day or the day before, but not sick like you mentioned.

I didn't my first time, but when I get my period I get a cold and cramps that make me nauseous/throw up.

No, not throwing up. Diarrhea sometimes, and I usually have at least one migraine during my period. I know, TMI!
