My uncle owns a 13 year old 55 inch projection tv. Recently it began to shut off by its self. Just yesterday my uncle said he smelled a burning scent. Then the tlevision turned off for good. I helped him dissasemble the back of the tv. A fuse was blown (we didnt have a replacement). Anyone Know what might cause this? I know there are alot of parts in a tv but might be something common.

Also would it be worth it to have a proffessional look at it or should he just get a new tv?

there was nothing wrong witht the colors of the tv. It was just the shutting off part that we cant figure out. Possible part overheating and turning off the tv.

sorry to inform you but it sounds as if the power unit went out, i would say it needs to be replaced , the new digital signal for tv's is just around the corner and i dont know if you can even get parts let alone someone to work on it. you can get a projection tv that is hd ready at circuit city for less than the price and cost of labor and parts for that tv. hitachi, philips, and rca all have a 51 inch model under 1000 bucks and you can get into the 57 inch or even a 65 inch for about 1300. my suggestion would be retire the old and get into a bigger better hd ready unit or even look at the 42 and 50 inch lcds, samsung dlps are about 1300 for the hlr5066w. most repair techs wont touch a tv over 8 years old

My brother has similar problems I like the style of old tvs but on occasion people want new stuff, my dad still has his first computer that is from 1992, an IBM Win. 3.1 and it still works perfect I would think its because he does not use the internet anymore, but on to tvs. Its just like the automobile they sell new ones when you could just fix a few problems with the old one, you can make a old tv modern just add new stuff here and there. If I find the answer to your Q i'll lit you know. The power switch may be worn down and just by moving around it may just turn it on and off constintly.

Since it is an older projection screen tv, surely you know that every now and then you'll have to change the bulb in the back of it eventually? It's a common thing for projection tv's happen to them.
