Robert Heinlein wrote several terrific science fiction novels for young readers, titles such as "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel" and "The Rolling Stones." Most of these are excellent and may get your child interested in science.
I also recommend "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. Any bright young teen will love it. There is lots of war and action in Ender's Game and it's all from a youthful perspective. It's very thoughtful, too.

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. I read this book first when I was 13 or 14. I can't stop reading it, and I'm 20 now.
It's a bit long. And it's part of a trilogy. But it's a compelling read.
Read a little of it on Amazon.

Catcher in the rye, 1984, Animal Farm, Johnny got his gun, Lord of the flies. Really any of the classics. Just read a book of substance that means something. Reading is supposed to educate AND entertain.

Any book by Micheal Crichton (ie, Prey, Airframe, The Terminal Man, Coma, etc.) One suggestion would be to get this individual interested in the works of a specific author. If they like it, they will pursue other works by the same author.

Maximum Ride by James Patterson and the sequel to it Maximum Ride 2. Incredible books, and I'm 20, but it was written as a young adult book. no swearing or sex, just good old science fiction drama.

if you're looking for mystery... check out RL Stien. I'm ten years older than you but his books were really popular when I was a teenager, and I don't think they'd be outdated.
