What is a good antidepressant that actually works or just share your feelings on it.

I'm 31 and been thinking I need to be on something. I've been depressed for a long time now and just can't deal anymore. I ask this question to get an idea of what to ask the Dr. about. Thanks in advance for all those who post here.

I've been taking Paxil for many years now and I don't know what I would do without it. If I have to skip it for a week for some reason, I knowww it. I go a little nuts. It makes me a mess when I have to miss it. its hard without it. I've had a lot of brain surgeries and thus trauma 'upstairs' and I've got chemical imbalances because of this. I'm severely bi-polar and a smidge schitzophrenic ( sp??), so If I don't have my meds, I just flat out don't feel good. Usually I cry alot. But Paxil has worked wonders for me and Boy, do I appreciate it. I also take it in conjunction with Desyrel, so I have two working hand in hand. It took 12 years for me to get to the 'chemical cocktail ' I take now, but at least I got here and now things are working for me.

My mom takes Prozac and it has saved my Dad's life. LOL Because if she HADN't Gotten on it, she'd have KEEEEEELLED him.LOL It works well for her, but she's never had any suicidal tendencies. ( I have them, so I would never even consider the drug. I have scars from where I've tried to hurt myself. )

I've had friends who tried other things and if I heard their names, I'd remember then and could tell you yea or nay on whether they worked for people . Wellbutrin hasn't worked for anyone I've known, and 7 of my friends have tried it. It seemed to make 3 of them worse, so they quit it immediately.

I hope that that helped you out a little bit, at least. *shrugs* I tried!! LOL

I don't know how old you are but the only antidepressant approved for young people at the present time is Prozac. Most of the others, called SSRI's work in a similar fashion. Two of the newest are Lexapro and Cymbalta. They say they have fewer side effects. Some of the antidepressants have a more stimulating effect than others and some are approved for treating anxiety as well. Sometimes it just depends on your individual body chemistry what works best and what dose you need. You need to give them 3 to 4 weeks to see if they are effective. Usually others notice the effect before you do, so ask your friends and family if they notice a difference. You should see a doctor (psychiatrists usually have the most up-to-date info) to determine what is best for you.

Hello. I've taken a couple of dozen antidepressants in my life. I'm now on Zoloft and Risperdal. These two seem to be working fine. Before taking these two medications, I don't think I gave the others much of a chance to work. Since you've had depression for a while, I definitely think you should see a doctor for it. I wish you the best in fighting this disease.

You may go through several before you find one that suits you.

A book called Beating the Blues by Susan Tanner and Jillian Ball is an excellant resource to have.

Your life style, diet and recreational activities need to be looked at as well.

Maybe some counselling will assist you. Maybe you do not need anti-depressants.

Good Luck with your endeavours.

I'm not into drug antidepressants. I think they just temporarily cover the problem for the most part. You should try Singing and/or dancing when no one else is around. It really helps sometimes. Go outside. Being outside with nature always seems to help make me feel better when I'm depressed.

I've been on almost all of them, Paxil, Wellbutrin, Celexa, Lexapro, etc. The only thing that has worked for me is Effexor XR. It has a few side effects (as they all do) and the withdrawal symptoms are quite bad. But I choose to use it because it works best.

If you want to try a non-prescription mood lifter, try GABBA from a vitamin store like GNC. It also helps people loose weight.

Protein - about 3-4 ounces at a meal, and about 1-2 ounces at each of 3 in-between meal snacks.

Check out the symptoms link at www.hufa.org, and see if you have other symptoms of low blood sugar besides just depression.

Every person's body responds differently. What may work wonders for some, won't work at all for others. A good therapist or a good friend works best for me.

I use Zoloft. It takes a few weeks to really start working, but you'll notice a difference. The worst part is it will make you feel sleepy a bit in the beginning.
