good question. Sometimes friends create a nick name for each other just for kicks. and sometimes people get stuck with nick names. I don't really know how to answer this question. Sorry

A nickname is like a social tag. People like to give you a name which either sums up your personality or what you do, or how you look (eg. " Fro"), or else a nickname can be a shortened version of your name/s....

It's meant for people to call you by. Easy to remember, and sometimes catchy. It's cool.

Well, when you have a friend named HabbleDabbleBoJabbleMohammadcoCamelDabble, it is easier to call him "Hab", hence the nickname.

in my case...it's because people have a hard time pronouncing it. for convenience. as a pet name...because it's cute.
