Cockatoos are extremely needy birds that need a LOTof attention and care. They scream loudly every day. The rescue organizations are not going to ship to someone they haven't thoroughly checked out. These birds are not cheap to own, so if paying an adoption fee is difficult, you might want to reconsider. These rescue birds have already been through enough trauma, they don't need another home with someone who doesn't understand them.

I don't know what state you live in, but in my state adoption is $150 plus any medication the bird may have needed while there. Here's an adoption center locator. They all pretty much make you take classes, because lots of the birds are victims of neglect or abuse, but they're worth it. I have an adopted Timneh, and he's the sweetest bird I have, now:

Cockatoos are really cuddly and sweet but they're also some of the loudest parrots, and they're really prone to moodswings, so if you live in an apartment some of these places may turn you down. If you can't find any here, you can usually find the best priced birds from breeder barter on Up@Six classifieds, in the wanted / for sale section. I recommend keeping up the adoption hunt, though, and don't turn down a Pionus or Grey, or another needy bird who needs a home, because you know they'll win your heart.

As everyone has said, I am going to tell you that cockatoos are indeed very noisy, demanding birds. They can scream loudly nonstop for long periods of time. If they do not receive the time and attention they need, they can feather pick, self-mutilate and turn on you.
People also make the mistake of "cuddling" their cockatoo...and the cockatoo can mistake this for sexual behavior. And then you have a whole new set of problems because there is often aggression with this type of behavior. Birds are not meant to be cuddled or petted...that's why there are dogs and cats! :)
I'm not meaning to deter you from a cockatoo, but be sure to educate yourself thouroughly on not only Cockatoos, but even second-hand pets because they often will have behavior problems. There are books on the subjects of second-hand pet parrots and lots of books on Cockatoos.
Good luck.

Be thankful that there isn't. Responsible pet ownership is a necessity. Too many birds are discarded after the "novelty" wears off. Birds especially need to remain part of the flock they bond with early on. If owning a cockatoo is really important to you than save up for it, it may take some time and sacrifice on your part but that will only make the bird more valuable to you. If the bird is truly worth having it will also be worth waiting for.

Because if they were free people would view them as disposable pets. I have 4 parrots...I had to pay for all 4 of my parrots. So, I'm sorry I don't feel bad for you that you can't find one for free or low cost. They cost money..and they cost alot of it. If they were cheap it would be to easy for people to make irrational decisions and just buy on impulse..and that makes it easier for people to just decide they no longer want the bird. There are to many parrots out there without good homes to begin with...and if the cost of them were lowered that number would just rise.
But there are alot in shelters and the cost is usually around 500 or so..that is lower than the cost from a breeder.
If the cost of the bird itself bothers you...look around and see how much cages are..look and see how much it's going to cost you to feed this animal. They are NOT cheap animals to have. You can't just go to walmart and buy it seeds, it won't live long. I've had birds for 10 years..and I love them all dearly. They cost me money when I got them and continue to cost me money..and I STILL love them. Maybe you should get a dog.

They are expensive birds to begin with, and rescued birds usually carry a high price due to vet bills, feeding and care (good quality parrot food is very pricey), housing, foster care, etc. If you're looking for a 'cheap' pet, a cockatoo is not for you anyway. The cages, toys, food, vet care, etc. that they require is very expensive, and if you're not willing to pay the price for the bird, chances are you're planning to skimp on the care too, and that will just create another bird that needs to be rescued anyway.

Keep looking. The adoption fees are high because they want to make sure they are going to a good home. Sometimes they have vet fees and other expenses to cover. Keep looking and good luck.

Try veterinarians, pet stores and local papers.
Make no mistake, even a small birds can be expensive to maintain. They need lots more than seeds. That's why adoption prices are so high. They are expensive little guys.
Maybe you should do more research.
