It is a disorder that is like mild autism. It is caused by chemicals in the brain (although we don't exactly know how). People who have it have trouble interacting with others socially. They have a hard time understanding what nonverbal cues mean (facial expressions, tone of voice, etc) It has nothing to do with intelligence but sometimes people may seem to be of low intelligence since their social skills are poor. People with asperger's may seem odd, innapropriate, or uncomfortable in social settings such as school, or other groups. Sometimes they get fixated on an idea or behavior and find it uncomfortable to stop.

High functioning autism. Asperger’s shares with "classic" or Kanner's autism a severe and sustained impairment in social interaction, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests. But people with Asperger’s do not have the significant delays in language, cognition, self-help skills or adaptive behaviour that are typical in autism; they are often physically clumsy and awkward. As with Kanner's autism, the disorder is lifelong and no complete cure is known.

Until 1990, Aspergers was not known or diagnosed in America. These kids were just labeled "a bit off."

Somewhere between 60 - 85% of those on the "autism spectrum" are diagnosed with aspergers. (7 out of 2,000)

It is a neurological disorder that impairs communication skills. People who have this are not able to interact well with others....they may be perceived as 'shy' or 'weird'. Often they will have a very obessive or specific area of interest....like collecting a certain object or baseball statistics or something like that.
