How do I approach a member of the opposite sex?

I am really shy most of the time. This cute guy sits on the other side of the room, and i have no idea how to get to know him! I can't just walk to him at the beginning of class-i guess i can. it'll be awkward, though.

Any tips on how to approach him? and when?

You said you are shy most of the time. That means sometimes you aren't. When you see this guy you think, I am shy. I can't walk over there. But when you see your friends you think, I am going to walk over there. Is it possible that your mind is mistakenly thinking that you can't do it when you can.

Walk over and say hi, as if he were a friend. Tell him your name and ask him what he thinks of the class. If you feel really brave, tell him you are hoping to meet people to study with. Even if he doesnt like you at least you can get good grades.

Approach carefully. There used to be a way for a lady to get a gentleman's attention. She would absent mindedly drop something in front of him. When he picked it up and returned it, she could thank him and they could get acquainted. If you are too aggressive, you will scare him. Just be yourself. Ask for help with something. Find an in that is not going to intimidate him. Ask his opinion of a sports figure. Then once you get talking, shift the subject to weekend plans or something like that.
