That gives you almost a year to lose the weight which is a very reasonable time frame. Here is a method that has worked for me.
1. Eat three nutritious meals and three snacks everyday. Cut out junk food. You probably need about 1500 to 1800 calories a day.
2. Drink lots of water - at least 8 big glasses as day. Stop drinking soda.
3. Begin a simple weight lifting program at home or go to a gym if that is possible for you. Ordinary household items (tins of soup, for example) can serve as weights for beginners. Invest in a sensible weight training book. Any large book store will have several.
4. Buy yourself a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day.
5. Record everything you eat and all your exercise to make sure you have a "calorie deficit". Two of the sites I've included will help you do that.
6. Park at the back of the parking lot instead of close to the door. Always use stairs - never the elevator or escalator.
7. A mini stepper is an easy piece of equipment to have at home and gives great results. I bought mine at a second hand store for $4.
I hope these thoughts help. Good luck with it.

Did you mean SEPT 7th? You can't, it's too late. You CAN lose about 5 lbs by then though by drinking 10 eight oz glasses of water per day. I don't mean ONLY water, just add the water to your daily routine and drink 8 oz prior to every meal to help you eat smaller portions as you work off this water weight. You'd be amazed at how much water weight a person can retain! Whatever it is that has you needing to lose weight so quickly just let it go and hold your head high. Your weight is not a reflection of the person you are inside. Later, when you're ready to lose weight in a healthful manner, try the Cambridge Diet. Most lose 15 lbs within the first 2 weeks and alot of the people on this diet are more than 100 lbs overweight. This diet also encourages developing a new relationship with food and provides the materials necessary to learn how to eat properly and exercise. Good luck to you !

Are you kidding? That is impossible. To lose 40 pounds you need at least 16 weeks, for it to be a healthy weight loss. Try cardio exercises like the elliptical and running. Cut your daily calorie intake by 500.

I'll just take the two points, because there's no way you can do this in a couple days.
If you mean by next year, drink lots of water, eat low-fat and in small portions, and walk a couple miles a day.

of next year? You could probably just cut out a few things in your diet and you'd lose 40 lbs by next August.

well that gives you about a year....
start walking a couple times a week
cut back on the coffee and non-diet soda's and alcoholic beverages
you could try something like weight watchers or just adopt a healthier diet and gradually add more physical activity to your walking.......(weight lifting, biking, swiming etc.)
