Sorry I have to say this...a CATtle dog hehe. Cat's saliva causes the problem so if you get a long haired cat it is most likely to lick itself more than a short haired cat. Regarding the black cat licking itself more (I mean come on black is colour) how could a colour change the amount of licking???

It would be more about the cat's personality. I had a black cat and he was the sweetest cat EVER...not he did not lick himself to death but WOULD dribble when patted (that was just his way aka personality). I still miss him.

As mentioned a hairless cat would tend to not lick itself as much so that would be the best bet. OR get a cat that you mostly have as an outdoor cat that would help with the hair hence hayfever problem too. Anyway good luck with it all...

There really are not any type of cats that dont cause hayfever and breathing problems, as what most people are allergic to is the cats saliva and not their fur.

Perhaps you could get a dog or other type of pet.

Good Luck

Cornish Rex are the best breed for anyone who has allergies to cats. I have suffered with this problem all my life, as my mother collected them when i was young, and i went on to follow the habit as i grew older hehe. Instead of steering clear of them, i put myself on an anti allergy program, my fur babies do come first ;) this breed it rather pricey tho, not sure where u r located, but they are very popular is oz, and make beautiful pets with their soft curly fur and gorgeous natures. i have also found that, funnily enuf, it is the shorter coated cats that lose more fur than the longer haired. usually u will find ur symptoms will only flare at certain times of the year as well, depending on the person. all the best with choosing! :)

Those who have fur will contain a protein that gives allergic people reactions, and also proteins in their saliva. However, I've just read in one of those science magazines, that certain cats were bred with a regressive gene that doesn't produce any protein causing human allergies...the problem is that each cat costs up to 4000$.

You can check out this article from CNN in my sources.

Outside of the hairless breeds, the Orientals are know to be less allergenic than most other breeds, due to the different texture of their hair. I've had many Orientals (such as Siamese, Burmese, etc) and have had people comment they are not allergic to my cats, while they are allergic to other breeds.

black cats have more allergens on them than other cats. And I think white cats are supposed to be the best for allergys

A hairless would be best...but, you know you can carry the cat to a groomer & have the hair shaved off-thats incase you already have a hairy cat all ready!

You are allergic to the cat saliva. Take an antihistamine and adopt the cat. You will be VERY happy.

well, when people are allergic to cats, it is not the hair. It is the spit the cat uses to clean its fur they are allergic to so you really are in trouble because even hairless cats lick themselves. A doctor told me this .
