because there are just cruel people out there in the world who don't appreiate good people.

You have to be hard to survive in this world. People take advantage of the good people because they care about others too much. If you are selfish then you can play the good people as they will do things for you out of the kindness of their hearts. Look out for the people you love and who love you but don't worry about the rest.
