Just pretend that you are WATCHING someone else interview the subject.
In the case of your question... Fred was then asked why he decided to be on the football team.

Lola sat down with him in the locker room on a sunny Thursday.
Lola: Why did you decide to join the football team?
Josiah Player: I was in the right kind of shape and it was always my dream. Wanna see me do 20.
At this point he dropped to the floor and did a quick 20 push ups.
L: What is the earliest point that you remember wanting to be on a football team.
P: I'd say when I was five.

Well, I write in 3rd person all the time. All you have to do is replace your 'I's and 'me's with pronouns such as 'he', 'she', maybe 'your name'. The thing I like about writing in third person is everybody goes "Oh, how hard can it be" until they actually do it themselves!

If you were writing in the first person you would say, "I went to the movies". Writing in third person you'd say, "Kim went to the movies". You are replacing I and me with her and she. No personal pronouns unless your quoting someone's speaking. Your example doesn't quite work. Instead of saying, "How would I word that in third person?", you'd have to say, "How would Kim word that in third person?". Not that your name is Kim, it's just a name I picked.
So if your boss wants you to write in third person, instead of saying "I'm an excellent communicator", you'd say "Kim is an excellent communicator". Get it?

I just read fatheads answer, and he hit it perfectly. Use he/she, they/their, Tom/Jane, etc. Nothing that brings you ,or who you are asking a question of, into the situation or question. As to your own question, you might ask " why do people decide to play football?" Or " What is it about football that draws someone toward wanting to play it? Whatever the question, never make it personal.

Third person is when you use pronouns like he or she. Maybe you could word it. "When asked, "Why did you decide to play football? Michael responded he joined because he loved the challenge.
