A good person isn't someone that smiles every time you look at them, because this same person can be smiling when thousands of people are killed for unknown reasons.
A bad person isn't someone who gets angry over every little thing. Because this same person can be angry when thousands of people are killed for unkown reasons..
A good person isn't someone who talks about the bible every day, because this same person can be living completely contrary to what he or she is saying.
A bad person isn't someone who does not believe in religion, because this same person can be moral and still accepting of other people's opinions and personal choice.
Just by seeing a small portion of a person's life doesn't mean they're a good person, because there could be some hidden things about the person we don't know about.
Just by seeing a small portion of a person's life, doesn't mean they're a bad person, because there could be some hidden reasons about them which we don't know about.
Good things happen to people. Bad things happen to people.
Whether they're 'good' or 'bad' we can't really tell because we haven't been around them all their life, nor do we know they're future.
So, why do bad things happen to good people?
Or more generally, why do things happen to people we expect not to happen to them?
Because, obviously, there's more to everyone and everything we don't know about!

Bad things happen to everyone...
Some things happen to test us...
Some things happen because we didn't do something we should have done...
Some things just happen...
It is not so much what happens to good people.. but more on how they react to what happens that matters.

Because (for Christians) this is not our home. Life happens, bad things happen to all people. It isn't a lottery, or a big wheel we spin, it is chance. Good and bad things happen to good people, bad people...everyone. How we deal with it is about our faith and what we believe.

one reason - Ecclesiastes 9:11 - 'time and chance happen to them all'
Another is our own choices - bad choices - bad things - still good people
Another - some force (human or other) outside of the person him/her self can cause problems - take the example of Job (read chapters 1 & 2)

If we all practiced the 10 commandments, not so many bad things would happen. However the bible says that good will happen to the good and the bad. So why shouldn't bad happen to the good. God will chastise us when we need it.

For the same reason bad things happen to bad people... it is the natural course of life... bad things happen to everyone... there are natural consequences for our actions

Because good things have been wrongly understood as bad, and bad people have been wrongly considered as good.
The bread from heaven was considered as bad; the denier of the One True God was accepted as good.
