Several reasons. One, because they don't know what it is like. Two, because the media portrays many people with mental disorders in a very negative and scary light while ignoring those who go on to lead successful and happy lives or even painting people with mental disorders in a true light. Three, people are scared of what they don't understand. Mental disorders are not widely understood, so people are afraid of them. Knowledge is power. Look how people with AIDS used to get treated. People can also be afraid that they, too, will become mentally ill.
I am studying to be a counselor, so my viewpoint of people with mental illness is probably not a good indication of the general population. I believe mental disorders are treatable and most people with them can overcome them with help and sometimes medication (depending, of course, the severety and nature of it). Sometimes, a genuine will to get better is needed, too, but this is not true for everyone. I believe people with mental disorders are people and deserve just as much respect as anyone else, if not more respect for fighting such a hard battle. I believe in the dignity of the mental patient as much as I believe in the dignity of the cancer patient.

Well, because frankly, many of them are weird. Maybe you are fine and dainty, but many people with disorders can't function in society--many are bag people on the streets, etc. Some return to real life, but many will never be able to function properly in the real world. There are as many kinds of people as there are kinds of snowflakes, apples, oranges, etc. I see psychological disorders as hurting people problems that need to be healed by God. Only God can change hearts. It is not just a matter of a bad point in life. It is much more complicated than that. I think, God loves them and is available to heal them, but they must be ready to receive Him.

People dont take the Time and try to understand others. They just dont know how to react to someone with an Disorder. It is sad, all it sometimes takes is a few Moments of Compassion, nothing to be afraid of.

I have depression and I can't tell you how many times I hear people say that it's just a self-indulgent state of being and/or I need to just "tough it out." Just as I'll never know what it's like to be gay, those people have no idea what it's like to have clinical depression. These people are unable to put themselves in other's shoes and think that their frame of being is the ONLY frame of being. It is a very narrow minded and ignorant point of view, because it only seeks to control other people instead of learning from them.

I believe that you have a very good point and my answer is simply that people generally lack understanding regarding these disorders and therefore feel less tolerable about these disorders so they then feel that they are weird.

I guess people without them can't really relate to the problems faced that come with disorders. It's sad.
