My uncle and aunt just had a garden reception and it was amazing. They had a sort of brunch buffet with stations that had a chef who made omlettes to your order and one who did waffles in the shapes of hearts. There was also a buffet with a variety of options for people who did not enjoy just breakfast... I believe there was roast and chicken and fresh fruits and salads. It was amazing. A Jazz quartet played during dinner before the dancing began. It didnt matter that it was in the afternoon, the brunch idea was really fun. The tables had amazingly colorful flowers and goldfish in bowls with blue and purple stones. It was sort of a garden of eden theme.

Anything outside to mean means fresh fruit with a variety of dips or sauces (chocolate, etc), and the classic strawberries and cream for dessert.
Lemonade and fruit punch, (with real fruit and real lemons) toasting champagne with raspberries floating in all the glasses.
For the main course, hire a caterer to cook either picnic style food that is fancied up for the affair, or do a really unique salad bar that everyone can choose from. Not bar be que, that's too messy to eat at a wedding where everyone is dressed up!
Wedding cake with fresh flowers on it, you're good to go. It wouldn't be really expensive either.

if you have a small guest list try a nice restaurant maybe your fave italian, mexican or whatever and they actually cater for different events at an actual reasonable price and you might even try to get a discount with the # of people you are having catered to.it is not messy, you get a classy feel without all the fuss, everyone is happy and you get a waiter to serve you. that is what most people want at weddings-to be served vs. to stand in line for food.

I would do a buffet luncheon. Choose a unique theme of food (Mexican, Caribbean, Kenyan, Chinese) and get a local restaurant to bring in a couple carry out trays for you to set up a buffet. Easy, cheap, and everyone will love. We have an amazing Mexican restaurant near us and my friend got a pan of refried beans, rice, tacos, burritos, chips and salsa, and chimichangas. It cost them about $5 a head, which was awesome!
Good Luck!
