you will not know if you have a sustained viral response for at least a year post antiviral chemotherapy.
as for being contagious, you are only contagious if there is blood to blood transfer.
good luck and try to keep away from stressful situations for a whole year following....rest and prayers and good vibes being sent your way!
(you did not state what your genotype was and what your treatment medications were)

If he still shows undetectable levels of the virus after one year post treatment, he has a good chance of being cured provided he has not been exposed to transmission risk factors again. In the past, the medical community has been hesitant to use the "cure" word, but since the introduction of the more effective pegylated interferon treatment and the fact that more people are starting the treatment earlier rather than waiting for more advanced liver disease, people are responding better than ever before and some medical practitioners are saying we can cure this in about 50-80% of the people who do treatment. It depends on what the genotype is. Some genotypes respond better to treatment than others; genotype 1 has a 50-57% sustained response rate; genos 2 & 3 have an 80% SVR. He won't know until either his 6 month or 12 month post treatment bloodwork. And by the way, sexual transmission of hep c is very low among monogamous couples; about a <3% chance. If you have questions, look up the info on a reputable hep c site, don't rely on what you get here on Yahoo answers. Hep c is one of the least known diseases (by the general public).

Once you have Hep C you have it for life. It is transmitted by contact with blood/bodily fluids (direct cotact, sharing needles, unprotected sex, etc). It can live for days outside the body, and most cleaners will not kill it. You need a virucide like Cavi-cide or Virox (or other hospital grade cleaner) to properly disinfect anything which has come in contact with infected blood.

Oh, he will never be cured. He will always be contagious in blood and body fluids. Hep C is stronger (lives longer outside the body) than AIDS. He feels better under treatment and is stable, but this will be a life-long disease. Take care, use protection. And always have a germicidal cleaner on hand for accidental blood drops on your counters etc.
