I have always been curious what God thinks of comedy? I have read much of the New testament and do not remember seeing anything concerning laughter?

Terry thanks for that site. I did a search for laughter and all the verses promoting laughter in one way or another were in Proverbs or Psalms. The New Testament verses in laughter seemed to shun laughter but describing the laughter as kind of a drunken laughter relating to vanity and it said in the book of James "better a sorrowful heart." What I am taking from this is that laughter is good in moderation as long as your not some joker who his always high or drunk laughing your life away and not taking anything serious.

Gal.5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Gal.5:23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Gal.5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Gal.5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Gal.5:26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
#01. Love. #02. Joy. #03. Peace. Matt.22:37-40; Love God and Neighbor in Godly love.

The above is talking about happy people, content, sober, serious, mature as adult, people and family aware an example as Jesus was and able to take up their cross for God and Christ to put just and righteous fruits ahead of every thing else, for benefit of others.

The humor, jokes and laughter is all around us in this life.

My baby grand daughter would have won the laughting contest if she had been there instead of watching it on TV, and I would have come in second.

The bible says Philip.2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.
This is a serious book about serious subjects, all kinds of sexual oriented people become celibate, totally sexless with serious intent to except the kind of Joy, love, peace and blessed to the depth of understanding, never lacking in humor or laughter and most of us are walking jokes that continue to amuse ourself because we get it wrong or bungle trying to get it right.

Have you ever seen any one paint a floor and they wind up in the wrong corner. How many years will that make you laugh?

So it is with all God has promised 1Cor.2:9; It is a form of serenity in joy, love and peace and without that for us all, not much to smile about. We have hope to change a temporary existence into a permenamt one for all.

This book is designed to collect those that will be with Christ and God. They love us as Jesus did and are going to be in the close, leading and head position and in a place few are capable of living up to, so that thousands are for the new heavens Rev.3:12; and billions [ only able to try to live up to or imitate the head, the lead or Jesus ], that are for the new earth 2Pet.3:13; Isa.65:17; 66:1,22; Rev.21:1-5; Rev.2:7; Luke 23:43;

If we have faith in all these promises, it is enough to cause us joy, love and peace in our short life here, we are aware every day that it could end any time.

The Bible speaks of laughter as a merry medicine which is good for the heart (doctors say laughter is healthy on many levels by the way) - and it also takes a very dim view of physical pranks and dirty profane jokes.

Sadly I do not recall where these scriptures are located. Some in the Old Testament and some in the New Testament. They are there - I've read them enough times I am completely amazed I cant recall where they are at.

I might add.., that there are a few instances of humor and one of my favorites is the scene where Moses comes down from the Holy Mountain to find many of the Hebrews partying and worshiping the golden calf.....,

And Aaron tries to offer up excuses (he's the one who fashioned the Golden Calf I remind you, to appease the disgruntled people) and more or less tells Moses.., "Uhm.., I don't know what happened! I made this fire and POOF! Out comes this golden calf!!! And I stand back and like DUDE!"

Moses does not even reply to Aaron's obvious attempt at covering his keester. In my mind I see Moses rolling his eyes - and is extremely upset with the heathen actions of his people.

Now don't get me wrong - this was a VERY SERIOUS matter - but as a kind of observer, you pick up on things after the fact that do have humor even in the midst of something very bleak.

I have always thought, though cannot prove, that Jesus had a very good sense of humor. I am certainly in trouble if he doesn't! The first time I remember realizing it was in reading somewhere in the New Testament when Jesus was trying to get away from the crowds of people so he and his apostles went off a ways to get some privacy. After a while, Jesus, the Son of God, who had been working all kinds of miracles and knew all things sees a crowd coming towards them and turns to the person next to him and says (in essence) "I wonder what they want with me?"

I don't know, for some reason I visualize him asking some of these questions with a little laugh and smile. Of COURSE he knew what they wanted and why they were following him around, but he had a sense of humor so asked anyway. I believe we are created to experience joy and I think laughter and humor can be joyful when not designed to hurt or debase or reduce another.

I do not know of anything that specifically mentions jokes, but I am reading in 1 Samuel and one part made me laugh out loud. It talks about how David's wife put an idol from the house in the bed and used animal hair for the hair and put a sheet over it to make it look like David was there when he was beeing hunted. That is pretty funny to me.

Ge 21:6
Sara said, "God hath brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me" -New International Version

Ps 126:2
Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing; then said they among the heathen, the Lord hath done great things for them. - King James

Ge 31:27
Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal way from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have thee sent away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?- King James

As far as the New Testament goes, the books of Matthew and Luke are chock full of references to joy, which can also be interpreted as laughter/happiness. They are one and the same. Even though Jesus is painted to be a very solemn character, I believe he probably cracked a few jokes in his time as long as it was a no one's expense. Who knows, maybe Ernie's (from Bert and Ernie) "HHEEEERRREEE FISHY FISHY FISHY!" actually came from Jesus. Maybe that was his little joke when he and the dicipals were out fishing. HAHA! Ernie ripped it off from J.C.!

You included laughter in your question. The name Isaac comes from the word for laughter. He was named this because his mother, Sarah, laughed when told she would conceive in her old age. Here are the translated verses:

Genesis: 18,12 And Sarah laughed within herself, saying: 'After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?' 18,13 And the LORD said unto Abraham: 'Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying: Shall I of a surety bear a child, who am old? 18,14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD. At the set time I will return unto thee, when the season cometh round, and Sarah shall have a son.' 18,15 Then Sarah denied, saying: 'I laughed not'; for she was afraid. And He said: 'Nay; but thou didst laugh.'

Absolutely

Mar 3:17 And James the [son] of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

This is pure humor. "The Sons of thunder"

Humor is a sense of shock mixed with truth. Jesus was the master of truth and shock. I would think there were endless giggles when he called the scribes and Pharisees whitewashed tombs.

GOD bless ya

How about Jesus using hyperboles?

Matthew 19:23,24 - I find it funny in trying to imagine a camel trying to get through an eye of a needle.

Luke 6:41,42 - And, just imagine trying to get the straw out of your brother's eye when you have a rafter in your own!

Sometimes a humorous situation can get the point across better.
