Hiccups are caused by an irritation of the phrenic nerve- the nerve that controls the diaphram. When too much air is taken in/sometimes combined with swallowing- irritation occurs and hiccups start.
In infants- they cry, they drink, they breathe irregular- sometimes all at the same time- this makes it likely that they will get bouts of hiccups. It may be true that 'burping them correctly" may prevent them- but it may be difficult to actually do that.
In any case, they cause the infant no stress, and they will resolve on their own. I found a website below that also explains why they occur

Ok, I know it's only an old wives tale, but I believe that means that they are growing again. Never fails. Every time my kids got the hiccups, they went up another size.

As far as I know, no one is sure what causes babies to hiccup. What I can tell you is that they are quite common in newborns--sometimes beginning even before birth--and that they tend to cause parents far more distress than they do the babies themselves.

to my understanding, hiccups are caused when the fluid between the lungs dries out, causing the lungs to rub against each other. maybe it is because there is less fluid in a newborn. just guessing. you may want to ask the babies pediatrician

Babies tend to breathe with an irregular pattern of fairly rapid shallow breaths, followed by several seconds of no visible respiration. This is referred to as periodic breathing.
