Because it wasn't called that in ancient times.
We know it as Winter Solstice.

Simple, because it was not originally a pagan holiday. It was the Feast of the Nativity in celebration of the birth of Christ, set on a date that coincided with several other religious holidays. Whether the Church placed the feast around the solstice for conversion reasons or not, it has nothing to do with the authenticity of the holiday itself.

It's been widely noted that some of the traditions that developed around this Christian feast have non-Christian religious origins, but again, this doesn't change the actual purpose of the celebration itself.

Because it is not a pagan holiday. Now Dec 25 may also be a pagan holiday for various pagan groups, but the celebration that Christians follow is not pagan. There are many days that may have various holidays on the same day according to different faiths

Originally it was a pagan holiday, the tree, the candles-almost all the trimming of Christmas came from pagan practices. The church took it on as it was something the people could relate to, and they threw Jesus in there to add credence to it.

When the word ''Christmas'' was added to the observance, that was from when the dictionary explained it. It was not called Christmas before that.

The same reason dictionaries don't have proper definitions for Pagan, Witchcraft or Magic.

Dictionaries are supposed to define words, not necessarily give their history. Usually they do, I suppose, but if someone didn't know what Christmas was and they looked it up in the dictionary, they'd learn the definition that everyone else uses. So it would keep them on the same page as everyone else.
