I have noticed at gas stations that there are only 2 storage tanks for gas as well as 2 meters on the pumps, yet they show to sell 3 grades of gas. At stations with diesel also, there is 3 tanks in the ground as well as 3 meters but once again they sell 3 grades of gas + diesel and that = 4. Shouldnt there be 4 meters and 4 tanks for 4 diferent fuels?

There are two types of gasoline pumps. Direct pumps and mix pumps. You can tell the difference bu the number of hoses. A Direct pump will have a different hose for each grade of fuel, and there will be a separate tank for each grade.

A mix pump will have one hose and two tanks. The pump will draw from both tanks, and mix them to create the mid grade fuel. Diesel is always in its own tank, and will always have a direct pump. Some pumps are made as mix pumps for gasoline, and a direct pump for diesel. The are on the same pump, but they gas and diesel do not mix!

Most stations carry 87, 89, 92 or 93 octane as well as diesel. The pumps here were I live share one hose for the gas and there are three different grade selections on the pump. Since diesel can harm gasoline engines the diesel fuel usually has it's on hose. That is why you only see 2 hoses on the pump, but you can actually get 4 different fuels.

If you include diesel you can have 4. When oil is refined and gas is created, the gas begins to separate, the lower grade fuels, like your diesel sink to the bottom, the high grade fuels rise to the top. This can actually generate many different grades if they choose to separate them out. There are some grades that are not used at the gas station.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was one tanker that dropped off the same gas for all three grades. Gas companies got to be shady like that since they are not making much money these days!

There once was a station that sold six or more grades. It's just a blending of two, though. You know, one part 87 octane plus one part 91 octane = 89 octane... get it?
