Oh, wow. That would require a really long answer. Can you not look it up in Wikipedia?

The shortest answer I can come up with is that the theory of evolution is the theory that creatures develop new traits (evolve) to meet changing enviroments and dangers. It's currently the most popular rational theory in scientific explanation of the origins of life. I use rational here in the literal sense of being derived from reasonable summations to differentiate it from other theories, such as creationism, which states life was created via deity decree five thousand years ago and that all the histories, evidence, fossils, and scientific data contrary to that is automatically wrong because the creators deliberately wanted to decieve humanity. Creationists believe that having evidence or seeking to explain the current evidence within their own theory is an assault on their right to faith, and therefore is taboo. Oddly enough, a large portion of evolution theory proponents believe in a diety created universe; they see evolution as a tool of the divine to create life and the timeframes given in creation stories as being symbolic rather than literal. This theory, theistic evolution, is widely popular and seldom discussed in creation versus evolution theory debates.

The theory of evolution is that man started as a different life form and evolved into the modern man. Other species also evolved or parished if they failed to evolve.

Formation of new species due to change in the environment. Adaptation to the circumstances is the key.
It is much more believable than the theory of creation.
