Does anyone know about dog nursing problems? My dog had 3 puppies on 9/2. Her back teets seem to be extra swollen and the puppies will not nurse on those. Is there concern? A way to relieve this? I would prefer a home remedy..I don't have much in the way of funds right now to spend at the vet. thanks

Thank you for those of you that answered my question. To those of you that decided to lecture me...I did not say that I wouldn't take her to the vet, which I did by the way with the puppies visit, but that money was tight from circumstances that happened after she was bred. Sometimes those things happen.

if the mamma dog is sore from you touching the actual teets and not the nipple, then it could be a possible mammarary gland infection. If that is the case for a day or so you can apply a warm water pack to the area. If it don't get any better then take her to the vet so it don't get any worse. If any thing other than that then it just may be the mother isn't comfortable.

and for the one above me who said you should have considered this before you brought more puppies in the world.

did she say when they got this female? no
did she say how long she had this female? no
is there a possibility she never knew this was a pregnant female? mabye
was it a stray? mabye
did she actually breed this dog on purpose? she was not specific.

there are a lot of other questions(according to this) that could be asked and if not emphasised then keep your mouth shut.

It sounds like the dog has mastitis, a quick trip to the vet could save you money in the long run. If she does not get on antibiotics for mastitis, you an run into abcess's and surgery/ If the pups nurse on the teets with mastitis, they can get sick and die from it. This is one that I would take in to the vet for. Gangrene is a big mess and deadly if not treated right away. Milk out the teets manually. Check the color, feel if they are hot. See what the milk looks like, thick pus, green, yellow, brown?

If your dog doesn't get relief from the swollen/filled teats, she can get mastitis. The pups may not be nursing at those teats either because they are too engorged for them to get a good grip on the nipple, the milk could be bad or the flow is not enough for them. Putting a warm , moist compress on mom's teats may help the milk to 'let down' and you can gently massage them to help it even further. After putting a compress on her for about 10 minutes, try to see if you can get milk out; if you can, put a puppy on her to encourage nursing. She may already have mastitis which causes infection and can affect the milk; making the puppies sick or even being fatal:( Try the compress first and if that doesnt work, please find a way to get her to a vet. GOod Luck.

One of my females was like this when she had pups recently. She had too much milk for 3 pups. I took her to the vet and he gave me a diuretic to relieve the milk and it worked like a charm. I only had to give the meds once or twice. She still had plenty of milk for the 3 babies. If you leave it alone, she could get mastitis and the vet bills will be a lot higher than they would be now. I think my vet charged me about $35. That was for the office visit and the meds.

You can try putting hot compresses on them to relieve some of the pressure. But if the dog develops a temperature or her back boobs become red and inflamed, she will need to see a vet immediately. This can easily become infected if not monitored closely.

Its unfortunate you don't have the money available to properly take care of your dog and her puppies. Perhaps you should have considered this before bringing more animals into this world.

If they will not nurse them she could have an infection. Safe antibiotics could help alot. By the way if you can't afford a vet why in the heck would you encouage puppies? Grrrrrrrr, think about it. Be responsible !!! If you rescued the dog and puppies, you can go to a Rescue Organization for funds and they can help you financially.
Think of the animal in a responsible way please.

PLEASE have her checked by a vet. Also, schedule a spay at the same time. No dog should be having pups with an inexperienced owner. Save the breeding to the ones who are qualified. I believe ALL dogs and cats should be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age. It's the healthiest life style for them.

if the pups dont want to nurse on those teats, they will just dry up, but it is ok, the other ones will still produce milk, and since she only has 3 pups, she will do ok
