I once did it to scare the crap out of my parents...here's what I did:

Got a sturdy rope and tied it to look like a noose around my neck, but really had another rope to hold me from one of the beams in the basement (under my arms & around my chest). Next, I got some of that blue chalk they use in those chalk-line snapper things and rubbed it on my face.

When I heard the car approaching, I got into the harness and when they came through the door they actually yelled, "Yes, we're finally rid of him!"

If you leave a place for more than 7 years and you cannot be traced your relatives can legally deem you dead, that also means you lose all your possessions. Fake ID and social secuirty number can do it. Also getting a birth certificate of a dead person is another way, just research it is the person you want to become well, in your local libraray. You can also change your name legally by depol then just move places. The best thing I can say is ransack your house, leave blood on a sheet, ditch your car near a very fast flowing river or a very very deep lake or off a coast, leave a bloody hand print and blood in your car on the passenger side, wear gloves while your driving and a hat to stop your DNA being left on the drivers side, stand about 20 feet from your car and shoot out the boot while walking to one side. Research blood platter patterns and make sure it is your own blood, then change your hair style and colour, get some piercing or tats and leave the place you obviously dont want to be behind.

Head south of the border with a good friend and preferably a voice-distorting device.

Have them call your friends or family from a pay phone a good distance away from your hide-out with a rediculously high ransom (half a mil' or so) for your release. Do this over the course of a couple of days so as to make it seem real. Now, remember to keep the stakes high and give the family an unreasonably short amount of time to gather the cash (24-48 hours.) Also, in case they actually do get the police involved, you will need to keep the phone calls down below 30 seconds to avoid tracing.

If the family gathers the money- WOW. Have them wire it to you and bolt- you're rich and you could be in Cabo in 5 hours. If they can't come up with the money, then the "kidnapper" should make his last call a very frustrated one where he hangs up in a huff. After a week or so, the family will have to accept your demise.

Interesting...

Hmmm, on tv a fires usually work. But they can be really dangerous and you might actually die. Running your car off a cliff will be a surefire way to make everyone think you died. If you are lucky a magnificant explosion will also happen and can be quite cool to watch.

Do rent a boat in a REALLY HUGE body of water. Have the boat capsize, then swim to safety! (If you even get on the boat at all) Make sure people note that you went boating.

They'll either mourn the loss of you or rejoice on your passing
