Depends: weed or resin? Cigarette tobacco or hand-rolled?

If resin, don't be tempted to burn it into a fine dust. It may save your clothes, furnishings and carpets from the hell that is The Hot Rock, but you burn away most of the natural (or, er, synthetic) goodness.

If you're using hand-rolling tobacco ('cos you get it cheap off your mate at the pub), let it dry out first. Otherwise smoking a joint full of the stuff it's like trying to suck a goose through a garden hose. (And you might rupture your trachea.)

Go for three-sheeters, they're easily hand-rolled. Don't make them too tight, or too loose, and try make sure it is well sealed.

Your roach (that bit of card you just tore off the Rizla packet) should be rolled up tightly - but don't fold because it will loose all tension - and then inserted into the smallest end of the spliff. It'll relax and unwind by itself.

When butchering your Rizla packet, tear off a decent sized strip for the roach otherwise you'll just suck it out and choke when you take that 30 second quad-drag before having to pass the spliff around.

TIP: When you're rolling, the ends of the papers sometimes fold over. Nick (and keep) your mate's Clipper lighter (the one with the pull-out flint stalk) and use that to keep the ends clear of obstructions.

It's a good idea to generally make the ignited end a little tighter than the smoking end. This'll make the spliff burn in a more even way. (There's nothing worse than the dreaded sh!tsheer.)

Finish off with a fine assortment of munchies from the 3-for-£1 bin at your local off-licence. (Those mini sponge cakes with runny chocolate syrup inside are particularly moreish. Buy them in bulk.) Alternatively, keep the mobile fone within reach and have the number for your local take-away on speed dial. And, finally, keep a bucket nearby for those times when you really don't have the energy to go all the way to the bathroom.

And yes: you have already ordered that food. And yes: you have already eaten it.
