Hitting me (Immediate spanking)
Outright defiance after plenty of warnings and alternative methods (time out etc.)

A spanking doesn't have to be an uncontrolled violent beating. I would never hit a child hard enough to leave a red mark or anything. But, I just want to point out that a lot of families who don't spank yell a whole lot more than families who do spank. I grew up in a house where there was never any spankings and my parents were constantly screaming and screaming and screaming at us (seven of us) because they were "communicating." In my house a smack and a time out are much more effective then the years of yelling my parents put us through.

Spanking is wrong and only all to easy to do if you lose control of yourself. My kids have only been spanked for nearly doing serious harm to themselves or others i.e. starting a fire, running out in front of a vehicle. A lesson was taught at the time of the spanking and I can honestly say my 5 boys were each, only spanked once or twice in their lives. All are happy, well adjusted, success full young men, ages 26 to 14.

Wow this question got alot of answers. I spank my children as a last resort, after timeouts and talking to doesnt work. The fear of actually getting a spanking is usually enough to curb unwanted behavior. I dont recommend spanking for every child or every parent. It has to be something not done out of anger or when you need and immediant result. Yep I am the mom who will spank in the grocery store if my child refuses to behave.

There were only a few spankings when my children were small. Throwing things at people. Deliberate damage. For the most part, restitution works best (you broke your sisters doll on purpose, now we're going to have to take the money out of your piggy bank to buy her a new one).
This is why the prison system fails. We throw people away (spank them) for stupid things, lapses in judgement, mistakes, and accidents. I equate that to spanking a child. It rarely gives good results and should only be the last resort, when all other methods have failed.

I don't agree with spanking anymore because I seen what it does to children it makes them violent. So I think kids should be punished by taking something away they love or other means to teach them the consequences of their action.

im a little older than most people, old enough to have my own kids. but when i was growing up i had my butt beat whenever i did something wrong. to this day ive never done drugs, never been in jail, and im about the most rounded individual i know of. now adays people dont believe in doing this that spanking is bad. my feelings might have been hurt when i got spanked but it was the quickest route that i learned what i was doing was bad. to any one you parents that believe its bad, hurting their feeings might make emotional scaring. just remember your kids will be the ones mimicking columbine because they are going to be too pampered to realise right and wrong and no wrong actions will bring on realistic punishment over talking to or sit in the corner.

I can't stand those people who say " I just don't belive in spanking children, they don't learn from it... What would you do if..." (most of them probably don't have children!) There kids must be brats! I belive 100% in spankings. It's people like... them, who have made the world so pathetic and weak! There are different degrees of spankings. If they scream... pop them in the mouth. If they lie... let them know the're getting one, and then DO IT. If they hit or kick... immediate whipping. If people were harder on there kids, we would have a more respectable generation. Which is what we REALLY need! Good luck with your kiddo's!

I would not even think about spanking my kids. Don't you know that you can get your kids taken away from you for that. Why don't you try to ground them or time out.

I only spank when they hurt themselves or others. Its only when I HAVE to get thier attenion for there livelyhood.
I think any other reason is spanking out of anger and the need to control.

I dont spank my 2 kids at all....my husband spanks my son though and that upsets me.
