Yes, without a doubt. Especially when you read what happens when Hagai, the handmaiden, is kicked out of the house with her son.
Ishmael is definitely the progenitor of the Muslim ppls, whether they choose to agree or not. The prophecy of who he would be-- a man of war who lived in the wilderness, although he as Abraham's seed would be blessed and have many offspring-- is exactly how you would describe Muslims of today. It's not really an accusation against the Muslims. As a matter of fact, I always felt bad for Ishmael, because he was greatly without choice. He had an inheritance, but at the same time he was illigimate and had no place in Abraham's legacy. I feel the same way about the Muslims of today.. in example, the whole crisis with Palestine. I feel bad for the Muslims, because they were there initially, but that land was promised to the Jews, and in truth, the Muslims have no place in "Abraham's legacy".
It's extremely sad.
But, just as God had compassion on Ishmael when Abraham kicked him out (Abraham didn't like doing it, for the record), God has compassion on Ishmael's descendants.

The descendants of Ishmael, Abraham's first born son, with the Egyptian handmaiden, Hagar, were nomads, perhaps Bedouins, a people who ranged over the peninsula of Sinai from "in front of Egypt," (East of Egypt) across Northern Arabia, as far as Assyria.
Over time, with intermarriage with the descendants of Abraham, by his 2nd wife Keturah, some of the inhabitants of sections of Arabia, could be linked with Ishmael's descendants.
Muhammed claimed to be a descendant of Abraham, through Ishmael.

Isaac was born of Abraham and his wife Sara, and he was "the son of promise" whose children would eventually become the 12 tribes of Israel.
Ishmael was Abraham's first born, of the servant girl, Hagar. He was blessed, but was not given the promise.
Ishmael is considered to be the beginning of the Arab races.
Isaac is considered to be the start of Israel.
Isaac's descendants received Christ, through Abraham.
Ishmael's descendants received oil, through Abraham.

It has been said that the sons of Ishmael became the Islamic peoples.
In the Old Testament when the children of Israel are in the period of genocide they are told by their God not to fight against the Ishmael's descendants.

Christ dealt with a lot of people who laid claim to Abraham and basically said it doesn't matter. It is what you learn and how you put it into practice or what you appropriate to yourself.

I've heard this. I've also heard that the Esau (Isaac's first son) is the forefather of the Arab race.

You nailed it in one. The ancients prophesized it thusly. Whether they nailed it is a subject of much debate.
