yes heats are one stage of the reproductive cycle in which the femal dog will begin to spot blood, and will ovulate in the middle of this (so actually it is the opposite part of the cycle than the human)so if mated at the right time during heat the dog may become pregnant.

the main relevance of first and second heats is with regard the timing of a spay proceedure (removal of ovaries and uterus)

if done in a prepubescent dog (before first heat) the risk of breast cancer is almost zero. (this as a vet is my recomendation)

if the spay is done after the second heat, there is no risk reduction for breast cancer formation.

on the other hand the risk of geriatric urinary incontinence slightly increases with early spays, so some vets suggest waiting for first season then spaying 3 months after this.

its 'swings and roundabouts' really but in my opinion breast cancer kills dog, so anything we can do to lower the risk is good.

Yes, exactly. The first heat is between 6-7 1/2 months of age. After that, she normally comes in every 6 months. About 5-7 days after the first day of heat, they can become pregnant, if bred to a male.

Heat in dogs advertises that the female dog is fertile and ready to breed. In heat the female dog gives off a scent which attracts male dogs to her for breeding. Dogs are otherwise not sexually active. Sex is for reproduction only.

My understanding of first and second heat is that one follows immediately after the other. During the first the female is neither fertile nor receptive. Vaginal discharge is light red. During the second she is both and vaginal discharge is now darker and heavier.

Humans are always sexually active, even when the female is having her period. Sex is not just for reproduction. A female's period tells us that she very probably did not get pregnant during the past cycle. The human female doesn't not advertise when she is fertile. In fact she can't tell for sure without technological aid.

Not really like periods. Unlike humans who are fertile almost all the time, female dogs are only fertile periodically (many animals are like this). A "heat" is the fertile part of a dog's cycle during which she releases pheromones that attract mates and she can be impregnated. Usually the "heat" is accompanied with horny behavior in the dog because she is instinctually driven to mate.

In humans, since we're always fertile, we don't need to go into heat to ensure the perpetuation of the species.

When a female dog goes into heat it means that she is in the stages of breeding and yes it like a period for a f female dog, and if you don't want puppies please keep her away from male dogs cause once she is bred takes only 9 weeks for the puppies to be delivered, Dog breeder & trainer of Labs for the blind for 14 years...

Your dog will have a heat cycle.
She will come into heat somewhere around 6 months to one year.
SHe will be in heat for three weeks and then out of heat for about 6 months. And every six months or so she will be in heat for three weeks.
For those three weeks she will have to be confined as if a male gets to her she will get pregnant and you will have to put diapers or something on her as she will bleed and have discharge for those weeks.
If you are not going to breed her please get her spayed.
It will lower her risk of cancer and of pyometra (uterine infection)
