What effects, if any, does using a violin bow on a viola have on the tone of the instrument? Details if possible. I know the differences between a violin and a viola, so you don't need to give me that information. Thanks!

The viola bow is slightly shorter (74.0 rather than 74.5 cm) than that of the violin, with a wider band of horse-hair, particularly noticeable near the frog (or 'heel' in the UK). Viola bows (70 to 74 g) are heavier than violin bows (58 to 61 g). Bowing technique differs from violin bowing in that more weight must be applied to pull sound from the strings. A violin bow will not work well for playing a viola, as it is simply to small and light to properly bring out the sound on the larger instrument.

You can, in a pinch, use a violin bow on a viola, but I wouldn't recommend it. Playing the viola requires a somewhat different technique, more weight to pull the bigger strings, and you will be more effective if you have the correct equipment.

I play grade 10 violin and im 13 years old. From experience....the viola bow is slightly shorter than the violin bow....but that shouldn't really make a difference. If your planning on acually playing though, id either try to get a real violin bow, or at least get one that is made of real wood and horse hair....no plastic, it isnt good at all. Though a violin bow wont really work as well at all. so i suggest getting a violin bow for a violin. DEFINANTLY

there differnt in size, no they cant be mix matched
