I had a tab at the bar and they put 4 drinks I didn't order on there. They agreed to take one off. But when she gave me my cc slip back to sign, I was so frustrated, I left without signing and leaving it. I know my card was already charged the bill plus 20% to make room for tip, but since I didn't leave the slip I am worried they will leave it this way with the automatic 20% addtl charged. Is this allowed?

They will still be able to put the charge through for whatever they had initially told you. Even if you don't sign it they will still charge it.
They won't be able to add anything to it though.

If it comes back on your credit card at a ridiculous amount, like they added a bunch of other stuff, contact your credit card company and they can help you out for sure.

I don't know if it's ethical, but they can definately add a tip. Many high-end places add in tips automatically. As for the bar drinks, definaly wrong, I'll make a note to be careful about leaving my card as a tab, what a rip off. I'd rather say I LOST my money than having it stolen from the bar tenders. If you are so mad about it, try writing a letter to the company if it's large. If it's small, start telling everybody and anybody what happened.

That really sucks and yes adding the tip is allowed, not how I would run business though.

If you don't sign it I don't think legally they are allowed to put the credit charge through. You have to put the amount in and sign it. You can always call your credit card and fight the charges and tell them they are unauthorized and they should take care of it. Or contact the companies corporate office. We went to a steakhouse one time and we were double charged for everything and I argued with this person and that person and the manager and assistant manager. I got their corporate office number and explained what happened and gave them the location of the business and they gave me credit right there while I was on the phone and it showed up on my next statement. Go to the top if you can't get results from the restaurant/bar!!

Yes, many restaurants auto-grat (automatic gratuity) walkouts. You can dispute through your credit card company that you did not sign the receipt because you and the establishment were not in agreement on the charges. Your credit card company can then approach the bar, asking them to supply documentation of the charge. If they can't prove it, then the card company will take the money from them and give it back to you.

I don't know what is allowed as far as a tip goes, but why don't you contact the credit card company and tell them you have no recollection of signing such an invoice and ask them to investigate and provide you with a signed copy?

I'm not sure if it is technically allowed but it does happen. That's why it is very important to always sign and to also write in an amount for the tip even if it's zero. If it comes up wrong on your bill you can always dispute it. Hope this helps

You need to take that up with your credit card company. Funny how everyone thinks they've earned 20% and God only asks for 10%...and look at all God does....hmmmm.

If you did not sign it, they can not charge the tip.
