Males have manes for protection and to attract mates. The larger and darker the mane the more likely he is to mate if there is more than one male in the pride.

Probably the same reason men have beards and women do not.

Actually it might serve to protect the vulnerable neck area when male lions are fighting.

For some reason usually for all animals the males have more elaborate assets than the females - I think it is to attract the opposite sex to mate with them.

i think its to be able to tell them apart if the males didnt have a mane they would look just like the females the only way you could tell them apart would be to look between their legs
