because most people older than them do.

Well, I chose to drink alcohol as a teen just because I wanted too. I thought about it and decided I wanted to try it without regard as to if the government or my parents thought it would be a good idea. My parents didn't really care anyway, but that is a different issue.
I would say to have to say that the most common reasons for teenage drinking alcohol are (in no particular order)
To party, have a fun time
Because they are told not to drink - I would say this is the biggest reason by far
A few people drink to try to be cool or because of peer pressure, but it isn't a large portion
To increase the chance of getting laid
To see firsthand what it feels like to get drunk
To relieve stress

The less secure and/or stupid ones do it because of the pressure they receive from their friends. In those cases, there is a high risk of them doing something stupid, and many of them are in a high risk of killing themselves or others.
The ones with harder lives or at the least more depressed minds will do it because it allows them to escape the drudgery of their lives. I know all about this because when I was a teenager I was always depressed and used alcohol to make things better... for a little while.
But one oftentimes forgotten answer to this question is that the parents have plenty to do with this problem as well. When a parent either glorifies alcohol to their children or just drinks a lot around them, the child will pick up a relaxed attitude towards the substance and follow the same track as their parents.
In any case, there are many reasons in this complex world for a teenager to either abuse or use (a subtle but vast difference) alcohol, as well as many solutions to their true problems.

Nothing much more than what others have said...because everyone else is doing it, because it is something to 'get away with' i.e., a challenge, and you are much less self-counscious when you are drinking and most teens are very self-counscious (am I spelling that right?).
I'll add one more though, boredom. I grew up in Iowa and other than cow tipping (just kidding) there was drinking and hanging out on 'the avenue'. Boring as hell so drinking (and sex) were unfortunatley the only other things to do! And I went to Catholic school...eeeeeek.

Cheap buzz. Not good, but cheap.
Lots grow up seeing their parents drink, too. My folks used to buy cases of beer for my 14 y/o brother and his friend to drink while they were at work. Set a good example, he's still an alcoholic at 48.
I went through my drinking phase but preferred marijuana. No hangovers and it helps my migraines.

I think there are two big reasons they drink alcohol.
#1. Its taboo--Meaning they aren't suppose to be doing it. Teenagers like to do things they aren't suppose to be doing
#2 It makes you feel good. Well to a certain point anyway.

This is my 500th answer:
To get drunk.
They've learned to enjoy it.
Peer pressure.
They are bored.
Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.
It goes good with marijuana.
It makes them feel social.
They are young.
Because adults don't like them doing it.
It's Friday (or Saturday) night.
It's graduation night or some holiday.
Their older brother does it.
Because it's illegal for them and thus exciting.
Because of a dare.
They saw it on TV.
To impress their friends.
To be cool.

They do it for many reasons. 1) To be cool with their peers 2) To cope with their problems 3) Because they are addicted. 4) Because they want to get drunk and like the feeling of a buzz.

From personal experience... not because of peer presure, but because it makes stuff hella fun, and generally makes for a crazy good time... which is what most teenagers want on weekends...

as said numerous times previously.. peer pressure, the feeling of doing something "mature" and enjoyment of their first "buzz". but i will take one more step and say they are emulating (copying) for the youngsters, what they see on mtv and countless other streams of media.. video games..cartoons. while reading a ps2 magazine for game reviews I was shocked to see a game rated for Everyone that had themes of alcohol registered on it. Guess who produced it... WALT DISNEY !!!! i guess there is no safe avenue for children to mature except for total parental involvement and oversight.
