CALIFORNIA: Legal with restrictions. Subject to certain restrictions, Section 12403.7 of the Penal Code provides: "...any person may purchase, possess, or use tear gass or tear gas weapons for the projection or release of tear gas if the tear gas and tear gas weapons are used soley for self defense purposes...". The definition of tear gas also includes Mace and other Pepper Sprays. The restrictions include a prohibition against selling such a unit to a minor, and a provision limiting the size to 2.5 ounces by weight. The misuse of tear gas in California comes with state penalties of up to a $1000.00 fine and/or up to three years in prison, not to mention a possible felony conviction on record. To be legally purchased, possessed or used in California, any cannister must have a label that says "Warning: The use of this substance or device for any purpose other than self defense is a crime under the law. The contents are dangerous--use with care." The maximum legal net weight for a cannister is 2.5 ounces, or 70 grams of OC, CS, or CN. CR is not legal for civilian use. Make sure to check your local laws (a call to the courthouse) before doing anything.

Mace is a chemical and oil based, where pepper spray is water based and uses the capsacin (spelling??) from chili peppers to cause the iritation in the eyes. There are two forms 5.5% and 10%, both suck trust me, had to get sprayed to carry it on duty. Not sure if its legal in MA, best way to find out is go online to a store that sells it, and in the description is says "Will not ship to:" and MA is on there then you know, except NY where you can buy it in stores but cannot have it shipped. Sorry can't be more help don't live in MA. Local places that usually carry it are gun/archery stores except walmart and *****, go to a mom and pop shop.

An adult in California is legally allowed to carry no more than 2.5 ounces of chemical agent. If you go to a gun store or Police Officer uniform store, they will show you what you can carry. The 2.5 ounce canister is plenty big. It would be good for about 10 uses or 1 year which ever comes first. Good luck and stay safe.

It depends on the locality of where you live and what their rules and regulations are. Call the local police department and ask. If they say no, well then you know. However, where I live, they sell pepper spray at Autozone... So it really just depends on where you live.... Check the rules and follow them... Don't get yourself into trouble trying to defend yourself....

Yes, I sell it every day. It's how you use it that can be illegal. You can't run around pepper spraying everyone you don't like. You'd best have a darn good reason for using it when you do.

There are actually people who are immune to pepper spray. Others, like me, just get really annoyed by it. Do you really want to piss off your attacker? Get a gun, get a concealed weapons permit, go to a range and learn to shoot. You may never need it for yourself, but you may be able to save a life someday, or prevent a rape. Food for thought

Girl, if you're 21 or older, get a handgun. Seriously, buy a 9 and spend some time with an instructor. Be able to protect yourself.
