An anchor of a show has ready wit , presence of mind and confidence as the necessary traits- it's an art.I always get amazed to see how people do it so well- like in beauty pageants etc.I have never hosted a show but it's my dream to do so. I know I'll get the opportuniy soon. How should I prepare myself to do it? I want to possess that art.

Try practicing a lot.
Read a lot. :)
Practice in front of a mirror or a friend.
Engage in social activities.
Grab every opportunity that comes your way to gain experience as well.
Join workshops.

To host it well, you should know everything that would be going on around the show.
So in case you don't have a handy guide, you still know what to say infront of the audience.

Eye contact with audience.

Clear and proper pronunciation of words.

You should look smart and confident (you should know how to carry yourself..good body posture, presentable look, etc.)

Have a lively interaction with the audience. Ask them questions like are they enjoying or are they getting bored..

Have punchlines. :)

Louden your voice (but not too loud, simply do not utter words like murmuring it or someting like that.)

..and SMILE. :)

poof! there you go.

Good luck.

My best suggestion is to join Toastmasters. This will teach you public speaking and confidence. You may also want to try to get a job in a call centre.

Call Center workers have to deal with lots of different people all day, and still sound interested and friendly. This will teach you how to speak with a smile in your voice, and how to sound happy even if you're having a bad day.

Read widely - both novels and newspapers and keep up to date on what is going on in the world.

Practice by interviewing your friends - make it your goal to learn 3 new things about them in each interview, while making it sound as if you are not interrogating them.

Learn to focus on people and really listen to what they say. Practice listening skills - using body language, and repeating things. For example, your interviewee says "When I was in the Congo I made a detailed study of the different bananas that were grown in the region."

Your response could be along the lines of "Banana species? I didn't know that there were different ones. Can you tell me some more about that?"

Learn how to dress and move well. Learn what styles and colours suit you, and how to walk and sit gracefully (whether you are male or female). Remember that most Anchors need to be able to dress fairly conservatively.

Most of all, take a journalism course. Journalism will teach you how to interview, and journalists are always more respected than somebody who just walks in and does the job.

Good luck.

It takes alot of practice! I took a Public Speaking class at my local college and it was one of the most difficult classes I ever took. That would be a great place to start because you have to do speeches every time the class meets and makes you become aware of how you are behaving in front of others! It helped me and my confidence tremulously. I could get up and speak in front of many people If I had to now, not that It would be on the top of my list of favorite things to do though but I have the confidence to do it!

Don't model yourself on anyone you see on TV. They are all very bad (they haven't even qualified as hopeless) at doing their job of being informative and entertaining. Be yourself, be confident and sincere, empathetic to your audience, open-minded to all sides of any issues that are raised, accepting of any criticisms that may be raised at the time but firm with anyone that is intent on being obnoxious and disruptive for their own amusement.

Good luck.
