Are you talking about documenting your family saga? Or are you talking about a saga such as in miniseries? At any rate, for the first, you interview all relevant family members, concentrating on those who are intellectually more interesting. You gather family documents and one clue leads to another. If your family contains a character whose influence changed family history, this is good. A politician - corrupt or honest. A murderer - innocent or guilty, etc.
If you are talking about a fictional saga, you need to enroll in a community college or other such instructional venue to learn the craft of outlining, plotting, character development and the elements that make a saga worth writing.
The former is easiest and can evolve from either a primitive or professional voice. The latter has to be damn good and you have to have considerable talent.
