Go for it. A very honorable profession; and that's coming from an ex-Army guy!

Think about all your options. Look at all branches.
The Coast Guard deploys to the MIddle East so don't be blinded by that. They will send you out where they need you.
See all the jobs before choosing one. Do you have college credits? Ask how they play in you enlisting. Is it better to enlist or study and go in as an officer in your case? Once you talk to a recruiter try to find a person who's in the branch you want so you can compare what they told you with reality. I'm not saying the lie but some are not up to date with what's happening or things change here and there and they don't know about it.
Good luck in your decision

I was in the navy 1987-1993. If you get sea sick don't worry it passes after a day or two in the worst cases. You will be mainly dealing with petty head games as your worst enemy. Your expected to be very well groomed all the time and that can be a pain with the tiny little locker and bed they give you. your bed opens up into a locker as well. and don't get up too fast in that bed or you'll crack your head on the rack above you just approx. 27" and then you crack your knees on the O2 mask in your rack. The white uniform WILL pick up dirt from miles around and gladly show it to everybody. Thankfully in winter we wear a dark blue uniform. Better spend sometime with your home ec teacher you'll be doing alot of ironing and folding and making your bed just so. You see in the navy it's just the small stuff that gets under skin and makes life unpleasant as well as the deep ruts in routine that will happen so be ready for that. They also will always say move up the chain of command or move out they mean it study for your advancement exams they are very important and also call the navy placement officer to let them know you want any specific assignment this won't guarantee you your spot but at least you'll be in the running.

I retired in the United States Navy in 1997 and my son enlisted in July of 2001.
My experiences are cherished. The skills and abilities I obtained are still in use. The travel I reflex on for quiet time as well as sharing with others who only wish they can go.
The people I met are like brothers, cousins, sisters, and dads. I will never dishonor in meeting them.
There is no regrets.
I survived the Gulf War l, war is not something I would glorify, yet the US Navy or the Military is not about fighting. The US Military main purpose is to deter war against America.
Whatever you decide, it is yours for life and nobody can take that away from you.

Just realize what you are getting into; all branches of the military are honorable. However, unless you join the Coast Guard, you'll be in the Middle East before you're done. Not an easy decision. Good Luck

my ex husband is in the Navy and my current hubby is in the Army,, all I can say is GO NAVY!!!
It seems the navy as a little more up to date housing, and training,, the pay is a little better with sea pay ect.
Don't get me wrong the army is good,, but I saw alot better perks with the navy.

if you are in a relationship make sure you talk to your wife/girlfriend first. being in the navy is just as hard for families. if you don't have a girlfriend/wife, then you'll have to think long and hard before getting into a relationship...you could be deployed as little as 10 days or as long as 18 months. you could even be stationed away for 3 years from family.

Okay.. advice, It's a good job, you can see a lot of the world, get an education in the process and meet lots of people.
Criticism; well, you can spend a lot of time at sea, sometimes it can be very dangerous, depending on your job, and, it can also be boring... throw in the seperation from your family, and it's hard, at times to deal with. But, if you make the best of it, you can really enjoy yourself.
