I love cookies. I tend to bake one or two dozen a week. Lately, my neighbor's kid has been finding ways into my house to get cookies. I tried to stop him, but he'll even break locks when he really wants one! I told his mother, but she didn't care. She said I should just let him have some. She won't bake and if I'm going to have cookies around, I should give him some because he starts whining to her when he sees me with them. She points out that I do give cookies to kids in the neighborhood, but I don't think that matters. Those kids ask me and they don't destroy my property. Not to mention, I make the cookies for me, not him. I think his mom is being irresponsible and that the kid needs to be scared straight. What should I do? Leave a door open for him to get cookies? Make him his own batch? Stop making cookies? Or report him to the police?

Thanks to Coragryph for getting the point. So, to let everyone else in on it..... the kid represents illegal immigrants and the mom is their respective governments telling the US it's our problem not theirs and that we should just let them stay coz they're here. Now, What Do I Do?

If I bake him his own batch (amnesty), then his friends will all want their own and he'll ask for more cookies!

Cute analogy.
Well, you have a choice. You can spend all your time and effort on the people who already have taken the cookies. Or you can put the effort into stopping people from taking more cookies.
You don't have enough time or resources to do both. And if you go after the people who took your cookies, be careful because a lot of them actually got the cookies from their own moms (not your cookies), but they look a lot alike.

1. you could make cookies for him but make him come to the door and ask "pretty please for them."
2. Tell him that if he doesn't ask, then you will report him to the police.
3. And then that would leave the responsibility right in the other parents lap, where I don't give a damn about who is making cookies or not it is HER responsibility to see to it that her child does not Steel, break and enter and then be excused for it because you like to make cookies and you should give her some. She is as much at fault as the boy and so should be called on the carpet for it.
Now that I am writing about this it is making me madder and madder...call the police right now. This is wrong wrong wrong. Let the juvenile court handle this little theft. Whats next your TV because he WANTS it.

They are YOUR cookies, not his. Just because he wants them doesn't give him any rights. You've already approached his mother - that was very considerate of you.
If he continues to make illegal entry into your home - and his mother doesn't care to do anything about it - then it becomes a law enforcement matter if you care to deal with it as such.
Don't be controlled by his bad behavior - if YOU want cookies, bake cookies for yourself - You don't owe him any.
Under the circumstances - I wouldn't make him his own batch of cookies either, unless he or his mother pays you fairly for all costs, including the ingredients + the energy to operate your oven and clean your mixing bowl and pans afterwards + a fair wage for your time.

Definitely report it to the police. If he's damaging your property, that's a legal matter. If his mother isn't going to take responsibility, you need to. Don't worry about the cookies. Obviously this kid doesn't know the meaning of discipline. Put your foot down. Notify the police, and get this kid off your property.

i think if you're going to make cookies, hide them where he can't find them. the next time he does property damage, report it to the police. Maybe his mom will wake up. His mom sounds very irresponsible. Don't give into him. He's a child and needs to learn that if he wants something, he can't just break into someones house to get it.

bake them when he is at school and don't pass them out anymore. you also need to call the police and social services. if she isn't going to stop him then she is in need of help with him. if he is getting away with this now he will only get worse when he gets older.
