I had have many dogs, when i was a young teen and even younger then that.
Here are some of my favorite dogs that were great when i was younger.
-Rat Terrier- 3 sizes- toy, minature and standard size
-Jack Russel terriers- as with the terriers these two breeds are very affectionate, great dogs! Full of energy! They became reallypopular when the movie MY DOG SKIP was released. Easy to groom and train. Only a slightly brushing to remove dead hair away.
Shiba Inu- another small dog. Looks like a small Akita. Actually they are part of the spitz family. These dogs are great! another of my favorites. They have a water proof, all weather coat, they can make do in hot or cold conditions. Oringinally a japanese hunting dog.
Labs, Golden Retrievers make also great pets for young teens, though they may get a bit bigger but they really arnt a very large breed like Newfoundlands or saintbenards....though if the young teen is kinda small and lacks strength, especially in the arms these breeds may not be right because they are strong and love to run..not lap dogs! Though a well behaved dog will bbe no problem for the teen.
Here are my favorite two sites that i recommend people to visit. I woulnd't recommend any thing that i don't trust myself.
www.akc.org
www.ukcdogs.com
Also don't rule out the animal shelter, they have many many needy dogs for good homes! Save a life and gain a best friend for life!
If you decide to buy a purebred dog, make sure its from a responsible and respectable dog breeder.....many people just breed thier purebreds with little thought and create more genetic health problems by breeding a bad female or male....ask around before you actually buy from a breeder. Ask a vet to see if he/she knows of some respectable dog breeders or ask for references from a breeder and see how those people liked the breeder and all. I did that when i bought my first rat terrier( i was 14) and i still buy from the breeder to this day because shes a great one!

I am an all animal lover, but I admit, I have a weakness for boxers.
lol
They love everyone, have an undying desire to please you, are very sweet, they love to snuggle, they will have energy at a moments notice, yet gentle and caring too. They have a wonderful short coat which makes for less dog odor, and/or shedding, a short tail so that you won't have everything cleaned off of your coffee table in 2 seconds flat or bruised legs from a happy dog, they can appear intimidating, but actually warm up to most everyone who walks into the room, and in general, they make a wonderful all-around family pet, that you can be proud of.
With any breed you decide on, try to find out the average age-span, common health problems, and most definitely find out the environments they have been in, and the temperaments of its parents. The more research and information you get, the better and more satisfied choices you can make. I would also suggest that you plan on an obedience class or two. Everyone enjoys being around a well-behaved dog, and it gives you a chance to understand dog behavior as well as bond with your new puppy/dog. (And its fun!!!)
; )
PS. Males are usually 60-90 lbs. (at a healthy, not obese weight). Females are usually 45-60lbs. Boxers should be muscular, not fat. They also, do not tolerate extreme high or low temperatures.

I'm a Pug fan. They are the largest of the AKC Toy breeds, averaging around 20 pounds or less. They have short coats and come generally come in 2 colors, fawn and black. There are some other rarer colors like silver fawn and silver black.
Pugs are hardy, loving, good natured and adore people in general. They are medium energy and do well in small yards as well as apartments. Their main thing is they need to be with people. They are not suited as strictly a kennel dog or one that is going to be left at home alone for 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. Pugs want nothing more than to be with their people. They love to play ball, watch t.v. with your, go with you in the car, whatever. They are very adaptable.
Good luck and Goddess Bless!

I have a female lab and she is wonderful. They can be hyper as a puppy (but most are!) but once they mature a little they are so kind and gentle-hearted. And it seems like the girls don't grow as large as boys. My dog is full grown and weighs 55 lbs. which is a nice medium size. good luck!

Rat terriers are small, energetic, playful, feisty, extremely tough, but also totally sweet and loving. They are a smooth-coated, low shed, hardy breed, with few genetic health and temperament issues. They are not hyperactive like other terrier breeds. Their intelligence and cooperative nature make them lots of fun to train, too.

It really depends on the size of your place and the amount of time your teen has to spend with the dog.

Well it depends on the personality of the teen.. If its a prissy girl who isnt careless and wont step on or hurt the animal i suggest a teacup chihuahua.. You can dress them but they are still fun to play with.. Or if the young teen is a little wilder i suggest a min. snouzer. They are still small and cute but you can be rough with them while playing.
