I tip according to the level of service, regular -10 percent, great -15 percent, exceptional - 20 to 30 percent. I also smile and treat my waiter/waitress with the same respect I would like . It sounds like you had a bad experience this morning and you are trying to justify your anger/behaviour, give yourself a day off, don't be a meany everyday of your life

I tip on average 15%, and less if the service sucked. But I'll tell them why they're getting a small tip and urge them not to make the same mistake in the future. Then I don't go back there for about a year until a good staff turnover has taken place so the pissed off waiter/waitress does't spit in my food.
I used to waitress. I know good service from bad.

If I get exceptional service, depending on what I ordered I may tip 50-75%. Average service with no problems 20% and those servers that are just bad get nothing. I know that restaurants/cooks have their problems and that is not the servers fault, but if they just suck they get nada! I've been a waiter at Denny's and IHOP and did very well. Personal experience has shown that old people do not tip very well. Women tip slightly below average and younger couples if you give them good service tip the best.

I don't tip if the service is bad, because none is deserved. But I do tip higher than most people when the service is good. Great service can get anwhere from 40-50%. Good service ususally gets 25-30%. If they're just doing their job, but nothing came late and they didn't give me any attitude they'll just get the standard 20%.
I was a waitress as well as a bartender, and I also know the difference between good and bad service.

This is always such a fascinating question and gets so many different answers and opinions. Guess I'll give you my 20% worth :-)
20% and round up to the nearest dollar for decent service, refilled soda/water, handles issues promptly, pleasant.
25-30% for above and beyond service, refilled soda/water without being asked, extra napkins without being asked, friendly but not like my 'best friend in the whole world!!' kind of fake friendly, knowledgable about the menu, wine list, etc. I also tip in this range if the check is small. We go to a cheap but excellent Mexican restaurant and I usually get water at lunch so our tab is like $15 and change. I at least round up to $20 if the service is acceptable. Also, if it's around the holidays and/or our server continues to be excellent even though she might be running herself ragged with too many tables, we tip a bit more. I think the highest I've tipped was 50%, but that is rare.
I do consider really expensive drinks or bottles of wine when factoring tip. It costs the same to bring me a $3 beer or a $15 premium marguarita or a $20 versus a $100 bottle of wine. I've read this is acceptable and actually correct (from a website dedicated to tipping, although I no longer have it handy) but would be curious what others think of this.
Buffets get a couple bucks if they pick up plates or deliver drinks (I think a good rule of thumb is around $1/person).
I don't have kids but if I did and they were messy, I would a) clean up as much as I could, including from the floor, before leaving and 2) tip more. It horrifies me when people bring kids to a restaurant and allow them to make a disgusting mess and then see them leave a couple of bucks when they leave.
Take out orders get nothing. I'm sorry, but if I use my gas and my car to pick up my food, I'm not tipping someone to put it in a paper bag. I don't tip the grocery store for a rottiserie chicken and premade deli sides (I know this is a sore point with some people but I'm not budging).
Finally, bad to really bad service gets anywhere from 10% to 11 cents (yep, left an 11 cent tip to an extremely rude, downright nasty server once. I felt guilty at first but after I had time to think about it, I was mad. I don't care if she was technically supposed to pay taxes whether or not she received a tip. She ruined our breakfast with her rude behavior - not food or kitchen issues - and I still had to pay for THAT. I don't feel bad if our ticket actually cost her money.)
Was that good enough for 20%?

I'm not a server anymore, however, I tip according to the service. I rarely don't tip, if I do I leave a note or talk to management about the problem. I've tipped up to 30% when they have gone above the normal effort for me: such as bringing a dish not on the menu. The norm is about 20%, I tend to go to places where good service is reliable.

I usually over tip, because I was a waitress bartender for a long time, and know how much tips matter. I especially overtip for great service (although I'm a rough critic) but I've never stiffed even the worst server cos you never know whats going on in the kitchen

I usually tip 25-30% depending on the service. My husband and I sometimes leave more, if the waiter/waitress is extra friendly, attentive and accomadating.

I typiclay Double the Tax. Here in Seattle its 8.9% so close to 18%
I also tip Higher for Hot guys and if they keep my soda refilled.
Also there is an espoid of "third rock from the sun" that addresses this issue and it is one of the funnist moments on TV.
he has a pile of ones and he tells the waitress that everytime she dose something wrong he takes a dollar of the tip pile. that way she knows how well she is doing. He asks the specials and she dosent rememeber them so He takes a dollar of the tip pile. Its VERY funny.

i leave a minimum of 10% if the service is bad, if it is something that the server has no control over, such as kitchen errors, and the server is great, the i tip 20%, but if the server is just awful, then i will leave at least 10%, for effort. we went to lunch yesterday, chinese buffet, the ticket was $16.28 for 2 people, i left a $20.00, all the girl did was get us a drink and take our plates, but she also had to clean our table when we left. i think 22% was decent.
