hiya funkychic this aint gonna help much but ive just bought a new sony vaio laptop and Ive been acting like a total ******* trying to teach myself how to use it! In two months ive had to take it bak to the store where I bought it (it was replaced!) and last week I had to do the same- wat a **** eh? Try re starting ur laptop from the start screen and when the black screen comes up press F8 and hold it in. This will reset your laptop and perhaps give you your sound and stuff back!good luck and let me know if this helps!

You can try installing this driver to get the sound back:

If no, and you are using WindowsXP do a system restore, and that would fix it for sure.
