I have a friend who up to the age of 16 ate sugar (candy, cakes, soda, etc.) without any problem. Then all of a sudden develops some sort of sensitivity to it. Now he cannot eat it at all. If he just has a tiny taste or even just holds soda in his mouth (without swallowing), his heart rate speeds up, his head gets hot, he gets dizzy, and feels like fainting. Is this possible?? He's gotten checked by a doctor many times and they all claim that he is perfectly healthy..he doesn't have diabetes or anything like that. So what can explain his reaction to sugar? Could it be that it is just his mind exagerating the whole situation? I mean, he's eaten it for many years...why only now would he develop a reaction to it? His problem is actually getting worse..before it was only candy, cakes and soda that he couldn't eat..now he's even scared to eat bread because of the minimal amount of sugar it has in it. HELP PLEASE! Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

The symptoms you describe don't sound like an allergic reaction, but rather a physiological reaction to something he had been doing without. In other words, think about how kids with ADHD respond to no drugs to control their condition OR if they are given sugar to consume.... pretty much the same way. The symptoms you are describing sound more like a "sugar rush" than anything else.

However, to answer your question, yes people can and do become allergic to something they were previously able to eat without problems.
I am deathly allergic to strawberries in every form, but I was able to eat them just fine till I was about 14.
Also, many people develop lactose intolerance - the inability to digest milk products - this is an allergic reaction to milk that is often an allergy that is late-in-life for onset (over the age of 30 typically).

Ok, first of al you need to know what is Allergry.
Allergies are abnormal reactions of the immune system that occur in response to otherwise harmless substances.
Allergens on the skin usually cause delayed hypersensitivity reaction. Roving T cells contact the allergen, setting in motion a more prolonged immune response. This type of allergic response may develop over several days following contact with the allergen, and symptoms may persist for a week or more.
My suggestion is that you seek another professional help to understand the cause of this problem, perhaps some blood tests and allergy reaction would be helpful to indicate the reason behind this sudden problem.

Yes. A person exposed to foods, medications, medical supplies containing latex(such as latex gloves, possibly part of a stethoscope) for a prolonged period of time can develop allergies to things they werent allergic to earlier in life. Another possibility is if the sweets and soda he tries contains caffeine because that can speed one's heartbeat and things like that.He maybe should try staying away from caffeine in sodas especially also and see if caffeine free sodas cause the same reaction.

I've never heard of anybody reacting to sugar like that, but I suppose it's possible.

Allergies often DO begin later in life. Sometimes it takes a lot of something in the system before a person develops an allergy.

There's no such thing as an allergy to sugar. To prove it, I can tell you that there is no sugar in soda. It's all corn syrup, which has a different chemical composition. An allergen has to be either a protein or a metal, of which sugar is neither.

That's a little extreme for it to be 'all in his head'.

I'm puzzled too. Does this happen only with refined sugars? Is there some other chemical present?

The doctor says he doesn't have diabetes. Perhaps he needs to be tested for other things.

Good luck!
