It's fine. There is a lot of noise and little privacy, but I grew up here and that doesn't bother me. I love the access to foods from all over the world and to be surrounded by people from all over the world. This is the most diverse city in the world, with people from just about every country in the world living here. I love the diversity.

About quality of life though... I have plenty of space for myself and don't pay a lot for it, but there are other sacrifices, like it not being in the safest neighborhood, but overall, it's really safe here and I don't feel scared at all walking around anywhere. Sometimes if it's late (like 2AM) I won't want to be out in my neighborhood alone, but I wouldn't hesitate if I were with another person. Places are still wide open and some streets are busy all night long... I like being able to get anything at any hour. The subways run all night too, so there is no curfew and you are never stuck anywhere (you can also easily get a cab at any time as well).

You cannot drive here or have a car. You can, but it's such a hassle. Parking is either really expensive or impossible to find. So I don't have a car and I like it that way. There is plenty of efficient public transportation.

I like it here. I've lived in Chicago, Atlanta and Boston. I'm originally from Boston and would move back to Chicago if the money was right, and the money in right in NYC. I like the 24 hour access here. Always something to do. If I have a craving for a deli sandwich at 2am, the bodega is open 24 hours! I've met some really nice people here, some I know will be lifelong friends no matter where I move to, if I move. The one thing that I really like about NYC is my neighborhood, Bronx. The people on my street watch out for each other, they make sure that we try to keep everyting in order. My building is like a mini community. Neighbors making sure kids get to and from school safe. Little things like that.

I also really like the diversity of the people. A mixture of everyone living together.

Unfortunately, I've only seen the city as a New Yorker and not a tourist. But eventually I will get around to seeing all the great things NYC has to offer.

Its nice if you're from out of town. if you lived here for a few months you get used to it and everything becomes routine and "whatever", even tho you'll never see the whole city and what is has to offer.

I'm from Brooklyn neighborhood of Bensonhurst and I take the train to manhattan every weekend or so to catch a movie or just chill in central park. Its a nice safe city. Theres one thing I don't like about it, tho:

Weather.

Summers get VERY hot and VERY humid almost all the time in mid june-late august.

Winters are mild, and snow is quite minimal for a city at it's latitutude. There might be one snow storm that dumps like 20 inches or something, but the rest of the winter sees like 3 or 4 small snow events and thats IT! it sucks cause I love snow.

But I'm sure the heat is nothing compared to Cairo. So you'll enjoy the diversity and "pleasant" weather. :)
