It is somthin about an airport in a big city like the atlanta airport or the la airport. I don't know I might be stange. To me an airport is a very good place just to hang out. See happy people enjoying the city they in. Not to mention if you lucky you might see big celebs in the airport. Like one time I was in the atlanta airport and I saw TI. Another time I was in the LAX airport and I saw Ice Cube.

You know, it depends on the airport and the history of it. A lot of major metropolitan airports do not hold much history, at least in the parts that are accessable nowadays. They may have been around forever, but the historical aspects to them often are bulldozed for the purpose of renovation and expansion. When I walk through my local airport (MSP), it looks like any other airport or shopping mall, as they are regularly updated to stay with the times. That's not to say there is no history to that airport (it's been around for many years and seen a lot), it's just that all the history has been removed. Airports are very functional places, and to stay functional must often be changed and modified for the aircraft and demands of the times.

However, if you find a smaller airport with some history, it often keeps some of its old charm. For example, I used to visit St. Paul Downtown/Holman Field (STP) as a group I belonged to happened to have meetings there. That airport has been there since the 1920's. The original terminal building is still there, in a fairly original state. Northwest Airlines (the airport is named after Charles Holman, the founder of Northwest) got its start at this field, which so far is the longest running name in commercial aviation to this day. It truly has history to it and I consider it a landmark, both the architecture and the fact that the beginnings of aviation and some of its pioneers walked those very halls. It has survived several floods (I think STP has flooded 5 or 6 times since opening). The most captivating of all though is a handwritten book of the history of the airport, almost like a diary, which used to be kept in the security guard's desk. This book is literally from day one of the airport's existence. It is handwritten, possibly by Chuck Holman himself! I haven't seen the book in many years but would love to track it down once again. It truly is a connection to the past of aviation and some of its most prolific founders and pioneers.

Airports are a great place to see famous people. They also can be archetectural feats. It's great to explore an airport before taking off. Also, places like ORD and SFO are virtually museums with a gate here and there, full of art and historical exhibits. I don't normally see people enjoying themselves though. I normally see people rushing to catch a flight or a rental car. Still, every airport has it's quiet places. Look for the gates of a low-cost airline that mainly does night flights, empty baggage claims, or mezzanine levels (a great place to observe.) I like airports because of the whole structure of the system. Watching how it's so easy to get everyone from the ticket counter to the gate.

I would agree in a way to what you are saying, because the airport is the first point where you feel that you are there (your destination).

Most cities' airport try to improve their terminals and its surroundings as well as its services as it may be the first and last thing a tourist would see when visiting the place.

It is always good to travel and be amazed at how airports of different places look like and sometimes when you're with your friends you try to compare which ones are the best.

It's important for those weather reporters who just have to tell us what the temperature is at the airport.
