Really what you need to do is determine the cause of your grinding and pain. Is it occlusal, trigeminal or TMJ related? Is it the result of recent restorations or other dental work? These are questions that a qualified dentist should be asking. (and then answering).

Go to a general dentist and get a "bite guard" made. It is a simple procedure. They take a mold of your upper teeth. send it off to the lab. You get it back two weeks later and wear it at night. It will be like a hard peice of thick plasic that fits to your teeth tightly. So that way when you grind or clench down your teeth will hit the plasic and slide rather than wwear down your teeth.
If you do it badly, i would have one made pretty soon. If you start to see yellow on the top of your teeth, that is called the dentin. When you reach this part, you ground down to the second layer of your tooth, and will start to get sensativity. Also this can mess up your TMJ (jaw joint )and will cause problems which are pretty much irreversable. Better sooner than later

Have your dentist make you a simple sleep guard. That's what I did. It won't cost lots and will stop the grinding,, you can also try breathe right strips, sometimes its a breathing thing that causes you to do it but most times stress related.

Go to your local drug store like CVS or Walgreen's. You can buy a mouthguard that you can wear at night to stop the grinding. It should be in the dental isle near the toothpaste.
Good Luck

The first answer you rec'd is good, but you may also try a cheaper way. They have them at sports equip stores as well as in the dental department of some supermarkets that you can make for yourself.
