my five month old pup has had diarrhoea with straining for about 4 days now, hes been constantly drooling from one side of his mouth & his chin, chest & legs are soaking in drool (its more like water than drool). ive had him up at the vet today & she gave him a painkiller & antibiotics, he also has a sore ear which she gave me drops for but hes just not himself, ive been wearing bibs on him for the past two days to try & stop his coat getting soaked because his poor skin is red, ive also tried to put some antiseptic cream on his neck to sooth the reddness & i keep towel drying him. the vet advised me to give him the antibiotics & if it seems to be helping then bring him up for a checkup on friday but if not then bring him up before that for a better examination, she also told me not to give him his normal kibble but feed him chicken, scrambled egg & pasta or brown rice. im pretty sure he hasnt ate anything he shouldnt because im carefull that way, any ideas what this could be?? ; (

take him to a different vet, now,he sounds really poorly, parhaps hes picked up a bug somewhere
thing that p*sses me off with vets, you got no come back if they get it wrong and quite honestly I dont like the sound of your vet, insist on an x.ray if they still dont know whats wrong, though I'm suprised they didnt give one, most bugs ect only last 24 hours, I hope everything goes well, best of luck to you both, answer 1 of my questions and let me know how he gets on.

Sounds to me like you need to get your dog to another vet, the drooling is a bad sign, usually that your dog cannot swallow. You didn't mention if he was drinking water. Food intake isn't as important as water. get your dog to another vet and ask to have your dog rehydrated, they do this by injecting fluids under the skin and it absorbs through the tissue, that has got to be your first priority.
Second I have to question why did you vet prescribe painkillers for those symtoms, did the vet to a bacteria check? Did he ask to do a an x ray? How about Barium treatment? Is your dog running a temperature?
If I didn't know better i'd say your dog got into something in your back yard, even if you think you watch them 24/7 they get into stuff believe me. I'm guessing a plant of some sort, could be poisionous hence the reactions you are seeing. Many plants are harmful to dogs and not humans.
Get you dog to another vet and get the second opinion, all you have to lose is the price of another vet visit and surely your dog is worth more than that to you. But your dog does desperately need medical attention.

this is a real long shot but do you have any toads in the area around you? they can be highly toxic to other animals and this sounds alot like the symptoms that can show.
In any case I would be making an emergency appt with a different vet ASAP as the vet that you have already seen doesnt sound like they know anything about how quickly puppies can go into shock from dehydration. Once shock has set in your pups chances are going to be seriously lowered.
Hope your little guy will be ok. Good luck.

Whoa. Sounds like your dog is experiencing nausea (drooling). He's drooling because he doesn't want to swallow. He's straining to poop because he has diarrhea. He feels like he has to go only there's no poop left. You need to find another Vet. This dog can become dehydrated within a day or so. The chicken and rice thing is because it's a bland diet and easily digest-able, but if he's not eating, it's not going to help. Also for the redness on his neck, keeping it dry is key. If you're not too worried about appearance, shave the hair from that area to allow it to stay dry and prevent a sore. The hair will grow back.

It would seem to me that if he has been that sick for 4 days, the vet might want to put him on IV fluids and/or antibiotics, or at at least do some testing A LOT sooner than Friday. A puppy that sick could dehydrate very quickly.
Did they do any blood tests? When my blue healer was a puppy she got very sick and couldn't eat. When we took her in, they found a liver problem from the blood test. They put her on IV's and kept her in the hospital for 3 days and she recovered. She is now 10 years old.
I recommend they test her blood for liver, kidney, etc. functions and find out what is causing this illness. I would also recommend a fecal test in case he has an intestinal bacterial infection. Try to get him back in to the vet ASAP. The sonner you can get him in, the better his chances are.

CHANGE VETS..a puppy that has diarreha for that length of time there is something not right..and that amount of drool is NOT
normal...why would the vet give pain killers for these syptoms??
Has the pup been checked for worms or other intestinal bacteria?
Is the pup running a temp??? Have you checked his mouth and gums to make sure there isn;t something lodged in his teeth or
gums or the roof of his mouth??? like a piece of stick or bone??
I sure would be getting a second opinion and fast.

with the redness and sorness, make sure you dab it dry gently as you could be making it worse..if your not happy with the vets diagnosis then i suggest you take him for a second opinion.,
as to the drooling..im not sure..im not a qualified vet so its best left in their hands, but it sounds like he may have a problem with his salival glands..hence the drol and the excessive drinking..that could be making up for the loss in liquids. Whatever it is, if he's still not right get him back to the vets..better safe than sorry

Try another vets, the change to eggs, chicken etc is standard practise for upset stomachs in dogs, but if you are worried about your pup go to another vet even if just for your peace of mind. Good luck
