It Carry's over from being in the womb before they were born. or it also could be covering up their scent glands. My cat does the same thing. I think it is so cute. I thought she was keeping the light out of her eyes to sleep but, I do believe it is from nature while they are in the womb. Its a security thing.

If you mean "feces" (poop), it's for survival/safety. The same reason why we bury bodies: so they don't stink. Predatory creatures can be attracted by the odor of feces and consequently find and attack the animal and its offspring.
But if cats are covering their faces, they're only trying to play Peekaboo . . .

i have 2 cats and i ask the same question. i think its cute when they do that. i think its actually just to keep the light out, because cats sleep 14hrs a day because they are napping not really sleeping(unless of course they are kittens). but yeah i think its just to keep the light out.

If you mean faeces, then it's only coz they're clean.
If you actually mean FACES, well, why do people cover their faces when they're watching horror movies?
