i'd like to keep my cats off the kitchen counter. i was thinking about mabye sprinkling red pepper flakes on the counter. would this deter them? most importantly, would this do them any harm? is there something else i could use? what about salt? any herbs they don't like? i know there are commercial products for this purpose but i would prerer not to use them around food. thanks

HI there...what is very effective to stop cats from counter surfing is using double sided sticky tape (packing tape works best as it is the stickiest). Once they jump up and feel their feet stuck to the tape they will react negatively and avoid that area altogether. They may try a few more times just to see if it was a one-time deal, but eventually give up as this has become no longer pleasant for them. Cats are naturally inquisitive so this method works best as they truly dislike getting stuck.

Mothballs are toxic and could become ill when they groom/lick themselves after touching the mothballs.

Scat mats also work, but are pricey so long as you don't mind the cost. Keeping cats off counters and dining areas are the only instances where I feel a spray bottle is appropriate.

It has always worked with my cats and I didn't have a veterinary degree to figure that out.

I'd recommend scat mats or rubber rug mats (the kind with the plastic nubs on the bottom)....if you put them underside up, the cats won't like stepping on them.

No matter what anyone tells you, don't use tinfoil. Some cats like to eat it.

believe it or not, coffee grounds keep cats out of plants, and out of places you dont want them. A little messy for a counter, but it would work, as well, mothballs keep them away, you could try that but then you have to smell them too.

It would be fine. I have tried it myself. It worked for a few of the cats, but 2 didn't seem bothered by it. I got one of those "Scat Mats" and that did the trick.
