I am asking because I used to be married to a person that robbed a bank and some days I wonder what type of person he really was and if I even knew him at all if he would do something so drastic. It is something I could never imagine myself doing under the circumstances under which he robbed a bank.

There are so many answers. One who is desperate. One who doesn't think ahead and consider the consequences. One who is egocentric. One who is very limited in the smarts department.
Or a combination of any or all of the above and the ones I haven't included.

Either
A) A desprete person that need money sooo badly he resorts to bank robbery
B) A person that is a thrill seeker.. some people will go to enormus hights to get adrinaline.
C) A person who is high on drugs where thier mind is not working correctly.
