It did not come from the Bible, because it clearly teaches that man is a living soul, not that he has a separate soul. And if you believe the Bible is God's word, why would you not believe what it teaches as opposed to other theories?

Genesis 2:7: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Leviticus 5:4: "Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these."
Leviticus 7:20: "But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people."
Ezekiel 18:20: "The soul that sinneth, it shall die."
Revelation 16:3: "And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea."
The Bible is very clear on what the soul is. It is a person, it can swear, it can eat, it dies(it is not immortal), and animals are souls.

Yes, it's very clear as long as you only read the ONE scripture in Genesis that man came to be a living soul, not that he possesses a soul.

But what of all the scriptures that speak of "her soul" "his soul", etc, showing that you are in possession of a soul, not being one.

Gen. 35:18 says her soul "went out from her" raising the question, how could it separate from her if it was actually her? I suppose someone could say that proves that the soul is separate.

You say that the Bible doesn't say that "our soul and our bodies are two different things."

1 Thess 5:23 says "the spirit AND soul AND body of you". I suppose someone could say that proves that the body is separate from the soul.

Matthew 10:28 says not to fear those who can kill the body but can't kill the soul. So if it's so clear that man IS a soul and doesn't HAVE a soul, how would it be possible to kill one without the other? Why is there any distinction at all? Jesus said "BOTH body and soul". Do you usually use the word "BOTH' when you're only speaking of ONE thing?

The point is that your overly simplistic assertion that any one who reads the Bible would find no reason for believing that man HAS a soul , Biblically speaking, is just that - overly simplistic. .

It originated to support an argument that humans did not descend from animals or actually belong to the animal kingdom. Otherwise animals would have as much right to heaven as the rest of us. Yet the bible would have us believe otherwise. Since our bodies are very similar to animals in almost all respects, the concept of a soul as the additional part of us that made us human was born. And thus only that part would be eligible for the afterlife. This ensures that animals will not by chance join us in heaven as all vestiges of our animal natures cannot make the trip.

Not entirely sure of the exact origin, but it had to be around the same time someone figured out that they could control people by becoming the "intermediary" between the 'ordinary, unwashed masses' and the 'high and untouchable' Divine. This perceived separation was most likely brought about through the very first pangs of tribal/organized religion. Did that help?

God said that he created every living soul that creepth on the earth.

It's in the bible in Genesus so by this more living things must have souls than just human beings

you're twisting the words a litte. adam was made a living soul not you. but then he fell and caused the fall for everyone and so jesus came to redeem us to make a way for us to get rid of sin forever. They are different. the inner man is different. we have a body that will die, but our souls( seat of passions, emotions, and other things and our spirits( seat of intellect and a few other things) will never die. they look exactly like us.

Research some Plato. He was the original person who thought that the soul was perfect, yet trapped in an un-perfect body.

Man was created both in the image and likeness of God. An image is a representation or replica of one person or thing by another. An image may be similar but not necessarily identical to its original. The term likeness is a gauge of comparison, or analogy. When man fell, he retained an impaired image of God (spiritually) Regaining a likeness of God is one of the accomplishments of salvation. Our spiritual likeness is restored in justification. Our character likeness is being continuously developed in the process of sanctification. We will be like Christ when we are glorified.

man is a living soul that lives in a body.
the body will die but the soul will live on.
god told Adam and Eve that if they ate from the tree of knowledge that they would surly die.
when they ate of that tree their soul lost contact with God, which is a spiritual death, but the body lived on.

It is called resurrection and it is in the Bible. The Bible talks of resurrection unto life and resurrection unto the second death. This speaks of life after the death of the natural body.
