hi all....

i recently read that parboiled rice is somewhat better than regular rice coz parboiled rice usually goes through a process where the starch in it is stabilized so basically its less starchy.

since my family eats rice regularly and i am concern of the consumption of the sugar in rice i thought of trying for parboiled rice.

when i went to a store today and looked around and saw two versions...boiled rice and parboiled rice. i asked the store staff of the difference and he said he wasnt sure but knows theres difference (obviously!).

i tried looking up online and cant seem to fine about boiled rice...its a type of rice and not a way to cook the rice.

can anyone who has used rice with the "boiled" tag with it pls shed me some light on what it is, whats the diffference, the cooking time etc...

i want to hear your opinions and thoughts on this before i buy the rice.

thank you all

Both are same. Boiled or Parboiled. Both the process are same. Basically I hail from Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu. What they do actually is once the harvesting is over, the grain with the husk is brought to the Rice Mill. They dump all the rice grains in a big cement slots and fill water. Then the slot is set to boil ( electric ) until the husk splits into two. After that, they spread on the floor to get dried. Then they are processed in a machine which separates the husk / skin from the rice. Then the rice is sent to another machine for polishing. This is what is called parboiled / boiled rice.

I use regular rice not the boil in the bag, parboiled is quicker to cook though. If you rinse the rice before cooking several times you will be amazed at the excess starchy white stuff that comes off of it, even the parboiled! If you really want to stick to less sugar and starch in the rice, buy whole grain or bismati rice if your family is picky eaters, just mix in a little at a time and then more each time with the regular rice. Personally, I love bismati rice and I learned you very rarely see overweight middle eastern women that's the rice they eat at least two times a day! Good Luck! Try it out, I can almost guarantee you'll love it!

Anything cooked looses nutrients. The longer you cook it, the more nutrients are lost... By itself, instant rice will have less nutrients, because it has already been cooked once. However, nutrients may have been added. Look at the nutritional information on the package... My opinion is that regular rice is so easy to cook, what's the point in instant rice; and regular rice is so much better... Rice is a great food and feeds most of the world. But, its a good food because it's high in calories, starch and carbohydrates. If you are getting plenty of other food, eat it in moderation...

Go into a Indian Food Store (not Native American, but India Indian); they usually have tons of different rices and I'm sure they must have some parboiled rice(even though in all my years cooking, I've only "parboiled" rice if I was adding it to something else that required additional cooking afterward).

Gram for gram, they are the same.

PAr boiled by the volume (1 cup for example) has less calories, but it is because par boiled rice is slightly puffed and weights less for its size. Once cooked, they come out the same though. Remember that rice is pure starch. Nothing else. If you cook out some starch, what is left is still starch.

In short, the answer is no, you are not saving any calories.

All it means is that the rice was cooked a little so that the cooking time is shortened. If you want less starch then buy long grain rice and rinse it several times before cooking it. You can see the starch in the rinse water.
