I don't think that your old comp will have the ROM and RAM to handle it even if you do find it for free.
XP is a seriously large operating system that had to have two service packs and a few other updates for it to be effective.
Good Luck on it though.
I miss my Win 98, I think I liked it better than XP.

Windows 98 won't upgrade to XP, you'd have to get a full version of XP. And the other answer is that there are lots of ways of getting it free but none of them are legal or ethical. Whether or not pirating software is moral is, of course, up to you.

Yes ask the question again when you have your XP disk and I will tell you how to run both 98 ad XP in dual boot mode from one partion then you can boot from either system and avoid the dreaded microsoft WGA tool

Nope. Cheapest is to get the Academic Edition upgrade if you are a student, you qualify. Should be around $70.
